The Forest is a rare charm of a game which is a bit rough around the edges and has its fair share of bugs, but you can tell it is the love child of a developer with a vision rather than a heartless AAA project with a hundred contrasting ideas. The game itself take an interesting turn on the survival genre, forcing players to put quiet a fair amount of effort and experiment on different ways to survive against the cannibals.

The player learns the game incrementally, discovering different ways to use tools, different locations, buildings, and structures. Woven into the survival is the ‘story’ which is played out through a serious of dungeon like caves, caverns, and experiences. Nothing feels ‘tacked on’ and the survival/story elements work together seamlessly, even if the game only ‘truly’ opens up once the player learns the game. It manages to successfully pull off the typical rather steep but rewarding learning curve rarely seen in newer games. There’s a sense of accomplishment after finding a helpful item in a cave, beating the first mutant or creating the first base that can fend off cannibals without much personal input.

Some might be worried when they see what looks like a default Unity Engine launcher from the start, but after getting in the game I often found myself forgetting that I was in the Unity Engine. There are certainly some improvements to be made to the game, but in 3 years I think the game has come pretty far and I’ll be excited to see what else the developers choose to add to this game.

It’s hard to really target who the forest really appeals too. It’s got quiet a few elements built into one. There’s times it feels like a horror game, other times a survival/crafting games, sometimes a strategy game and now and again a dungeon crawler type RPG. I wouldn’t say there’s “Something for everyone” but If any 4 of those appeal, then it’s certainly worth a try.

Absolutely phenomenal. Long time AoM fan. Everything has been remastered well. As well as the changes to gameplay and meta makes sense. Any AoM fan will be impressed with this version of the game.

extremely inspiring open world exploration platforming game. I love its atmosphere and mechanics. It is very respectful to the player and the player direction. I hope that I can make a game like this one day.
