Didn't expect this game to be so complex

I got attracted by Diablo 1 aesthetics. Had fun blasting hords of enemies in a few hits.

During your attempts, you meet some characters, so there is lore to the game. Additionally, there are some hidden mechanics on each map. Unfortunately, there are only 5(+1) of them which is not much.

Complexity of this game comes from variety of equipment. Yes you do have inventory. Slots for boots, gloves, helmet, rings and amulet. Plus each level up you can choose what thing to boost. Besides that, you have potions which improves your build by an absurd amount.

Each character got unique set of traits and abilities. With the help of abilities, which are universal, upgrading them is customizable as well. My favorite is tank because survivability could boost your damage. So you don't need to bother with sustaining your life on battlefield.

If you compete mastery you can get this unique traits for another character. With such massive tool of possibilities you can have a lot of options to work with.

Not only that, you can customize the difficulty. The are a list of artifacts which makes your completion much much harder.

Things I'm not happy with is a lack of QoL because I can't make builds. So every time I lvl up, I have to manually search what I need, don't need, what to boost, what to keep. It's tedious, really. With over 500+ quests to complete you have to cycle through a lot of runs.

Plus I don't like the music. It's not Diablo 1 level of soundtrack. It gets dull really quick.

Overall, really great games with replayability, unique mechanics, interesting old-school design and plot driven story. I really like the part with merchant and how developers decided to ditch grind!

Worth buying for full price.

Early Access Review
Frightening Lack of QoL
I do enjoy the game but it's lacking basic QoL features. Some examples: limited inventory slots, armor is a part of your inventory space(no separate armor slots), for some reason quick bar slots are a part of inventory (subjective but I prefer it to be a separate entities), can't move chests with loot (destroy it, grab loot, build chest, insert loot in it), limited stack options (resulting in overabundance of loot), no quick sorting (insert loot into every chest manually or by holding E), potions doesn't work during the effect (if poisoned drinking anti poison potion doesn't help you cure it).

Content is important but after that I recommend developers to focus on QoL. Great game examples in that sense are Terraria and V Rising.

Expect for future updates and to change my review into positive one. Until then it remains as it is.

I can see a good potential in customization and mechanics progression but don't want to deal with anything else 🙈

This game immediately greets you with dead pan characters. You can hear a voiced dialog but the mouth isn't moving. Same goes to the enemies. There are hords of them and special enemies are a bullet sponges. Imagine smoker in Left 4 Dead but he would have hp almost as a tank. That's what sort of enemies are in this game.

My favorite part is missing FOV slider (and pathetic excuse from players why it's missing) and eyes strain. After a short session of the game you eyes literally starts to hurt. I have no idea how people let this exist! And you can't remove black borders of your screen either. Also the sound of the guns sounds weak.

I wish that this game could be more than a generic carousel shooter but reality dictates differently. Yeah and instead of gender you have the option between feminine and masculine body types...

I'm really surprised to see that not only this game is getting regular updates but it's also releasing new content. What's most important that this content suits well with the main game. It doesn't look out of style or anything like that.

In terms of ARPG all mechanics are not that complicated (in comparison to the most popular games of this genre) but it doesn't make this game bad. Consider Titan Quest as a first step towards ARPG experience. A big but would and old difficulty system in which you have to complete the main story 2 times, just to unlock Legendary difficulty.

The plot line wouldn't suit well with you because it's hidden inside the dialogs (which are voiced for the most part) and tons of quest text. Sure, it's an old game but some modern games do the exact same thing. I'm playing a video game which is an interactive cultural experience. Keep this in mind while trying to understand what characters want from you while you are fighting for your life!

Music is not tasteless. It's got a lot of genre variety and rich composition. Mastering is top notch too.

What really bothers is 192 kbps. Should be at least in 320 and that's golden standard!
Review would be negative, until fixed.

EDIT: figure out that you need to turn on "download high-quality audio files" in steam settings and still it's in WAV format which means that you manually need to convert files with quality loss. Why it's not FLAC surprises me.

One of the Best Coop Oriented Games

After trying this game on the "limited free to play" period, I immediately got pulled in. Let me explain why.

From the technical side, the game structure literally forms a perfect circle. It's got everything to be the best:
  • Perk Progression
Huge list of active and passive abilities for your dwarf. Unfortunately you are limited to 3 passive and 2 active perks. I recommend you to build different loadouts for different missions/situations.

  • Leveling System
Which is only relevant till your first class promotion, if you want to go beyond then it's only for show-up.

  • Class Variety
Scout, engineer, gunner and driller. There are no overpowered classes. Game balanced in a way that every class synergises with each other. The lack of one can be compensated with the presence of another. Each class gives you an absolutely different gameplay style.

  •  Weapon Modding
You've got an option from 2 to 3 modifications with 4 tier columns. That's not all, also you could get an overclock which gives a special bonus or ability. Each overclock got a unique ability and such modification is not easy to get. Consider this an extra layer of weapon modifications.

  •   Rich Cosmetic System
You could buy beards, color of your skin, helmets, 3 types of armor. All of it purchasable with your hard earned resources that you've gained through playing the mission. No loot-box bs whatsoever. Besides that there are rare cosmetics like weapon skins, victory animations, color for armor, pickaxe parts (which is fully customizable and can be set differently for every class) and extra beards (check Events section).

  •  Resources
Each region has it's own rare resource type. Icon displays which is which. Additionally you find extra information about it in glossary. Nitra and gold are universal. Same goes to additional rare materials like bismar or unknown (to this day) secret alien cube. Nitra is your source of ammunition and health. Sugar is your medkit but game warns you that sugar obsession is never a good thing (which is true).

  • Coop Language
Multiplayer player interaction designed in such a way that you don't even need to use chat to be understood. For example, a pointer could be used to show which resources you need help with, or you could use to show which way you should go, or simply hold it in your hands so your partners could see where you are if they got lost. And that's not a full summary of what you could do with it. Also you have special character shouting interactions. Perfect "mute" multiplayer language. It should be framed in some technical gaming books.

  • Solo Play
Even with core coop experience developers managed to achieve acceptable action in solo play. Robot Bosco could compensate for the absence of dwarfs in your party. Obviously it would be a pain playing solo on 133% difficulty. You've been warned!

  • Difficulty & Mission Bonuses
From 25% to 100% and then after completing an assignment you unlock hell 133% difficulty. Playing public on such difficulty is a potential waste of time. This percentage increases a reward gain. 100%= double reward and so on. With the mission length and modification type (negative or positive) % grows.

  • Events
There are lots of random encounters during your playthrough. There is a corrupted robot - BET-[deeprockgalactic.gamepedia.com], rare machine events[deeprockgalactic.gamepedia.com](each with different RNG element), rare cash that you have to repair to get random cosmetic item and medium amount of rare resources, and lastly you can find coordinates which lead you to additional more valuable cosmetic items. Overall plenty of reasons to fully explore the mission.

  • End Game (Deep Dives)
Each Thursday there is a refresh for 3 types of mission. Deep Dive, Elite Deep Dive and Weekly Core Hunt. Consider the last type a warm up for deep dives.  Deep dives is a test for your skills. If you fail on your third mission, you'll have to start over again (in case if you want to fully finish the mission). All your ammo and resources transfer from the first mission till the last one. You goal to complete 3 missions in a row in one run. The Elite variant is a more difficult alternative with random bonus modifiers.

  • Visual
One of the coolest parts of the game. Remember Dead Space visual vibe? When you don't need an UI because all indicators either on your character or guns. You could make the same thing here. Turn in to minimum in settings and you are set to go. All visual cues in front of your face.

Things that upset me the most is elitistic hardcore community (that demands more difficulty) and the soundtrack. It's not a good fit for such game. If you turn it off, you'll see what I mean. The game will become a horror. Creepy enemies, noisy wind etc. Test it for yourself.

I could continue describing the game but I'm afraid it would look like a guide. So, I'll end up with a quick QoL tip[www.pcgamingwiki.com] for you all. Thanks for reading and see you on the battlefield.

Ph'nglui mglw'nafh Cthulhu R'lyeh wgah'nagl fhtagn

Imagine combining Lovecraft with Azimov. You'll get a sense of the story narrative in this game. CAN YOU HEAR THEIR VOICES? Dark creatures voices THEY ARE IN MY HEAD AND I CAN'T MAKE THEM STOP will accompany you from 1 riddle to another. The plot is a prequel to the Moons of Madness story THE SPACE IS WHERE THEY LIVE.

The gameplay is like a "captcha" like puzzle. There are certain hints with images and loose text. And all you need to do is to type text with the correct answer. Plain simple. Personally after 30+ attempts of guessing (especially in 4th level), I gave up and used a guide. If you skip puzzle element you'll get a good sense of the narrative. THEY WILL CAPTURE US AND USE AGAINST OUR WILL

Unfortunately there are not so much easter eggs. For example type "book of the dead" in the 5th level. Interesting stuff.

Can't wait to play one biome and then stop!

Basically this game is about mistakes. Mistakes in developers trust, mistakes in your choices, mistakes of your past. I doubt that the game will ever be changed besides the mods usage. It feels like this game is more about nostalgia abuse. No doubt, I had a blast during alpha demo but nothing of that sort during release version.

You have to understand that your effort annuls every time you leaving the zone. You can see different zones on your map. For example, I wasted 3,5 hours exploring the zone and killing the boss just to get a drop for 0,2 faster climbing (an artifact that I could transfer to the different zone). Also it is possible to get universal weapon that could be transferred to the different zones but it’s very rare and doesn’t give you much “time save”. All your equipment gone, all your pets gone. Do everything over again. What a great “mechanic”, right?

I don’t know why you need traders. They are useless. Crafting, smiting beyond uselessness. Death is a part of your gameplay. The only punish you get is a time wasted getting to the place you died before to finish the boss.

Overall it’s a horrible disaster wrapped in layer of nostalgia and disappointment. At least it’s a good practice to train yourself not to trust in early access games.

A Missed Coop Opportunity
I know that negative review for this unpopular game is like a nail in a coffin but I don’t see any other option to attract developer’s attention. Fix network instability on your servers! It’s constantly crashing thus making coop experience useless. Either make an ability to host locally or fix your useless servers. Overall this game is great and I’m writing negative review with grief and sadness.

Pixel art at it’s finest. Interesting animations and humorous characters, each with unique set of animations and style. You can play as goat ridding a dwarf or socially obsessed witch who uses selfie stick as a magic wand.

Gameplay is rather basic. You have a large variety of skills but at the same time you are only limited to 4 active ones. Some characters have 10 or more skills and each skill has it’s own upgrades (2 or 3 depends on the type of skill). So, you have to think way over ahead because apparently you can’t refund them.

Music is somewhat interesting but quickly becomes repetitive. Nothing special to note.

Coop experience is a core feature of this game. It’s fun, enjoyable but for some reason broken. From the look at the community hub apparently developers will not fix it anytime soon. If you are looking for a great coop game, ignore it. This game feels like an abandon project.
