Lots of people are comparing this game to Ragnarok Online (RO), but Tree of Savior is actually more similar to another famous IMC game, Granado Espada (GE). The same group of people worked on all three games, and it shows.

While its art and class design is meant to invoke RO, the teams system, item shop, megaphones, EXP cards, map design, audio, and even costumes are basically copied from GE.

The Good:

Visually beautiful
Large map with many zones and assets
Very content rich for a brand new MMO
Music by the legendary soundTemP and friends (same composers for RO and GE)
Nostalgia.

The Bad:

Too much stuff locked behind microtransactions. Without a paid token, there are heavy restrictions on trading.
Bots and gold sellers. Every game has a few, but it's an all-out infestation here. IMC isn't even trying to stop them.
Iffy controls. The keyboard system is not accurate or fast enough for PVP, and the mouse system is not as fluid or responsive as say, Diablo 3.
Unpolished. Problems with hitboxes, bugged quests, invisible walls, etc.
Unsuitable music. The throbbing techno was an good choice for the grimy world of GE, but not here. The RO soundtrack alternated between light ambiance and memorable themes, which would've suited ToS better.

The Misunderstood:

Questing may seem linear at first, but becomes more open world later on. The map progression system is identical to GE, but not fully open world like RO.
Grindy for a modern day MMO. Roughly as grindy as GE, but thankfully nowhere as grindy as RO. Some people like this, some people don't.
The class system feels overwhelming at first, but it's designed to create highly specialized characters that provide a niche service to parties or the entire community (crafting, upgrading, etc). This is similar to RO, and indeed many skill concepts in ToS are borrowed from RO/GE. But due to the grinding, there needs to be easier/cheaper ways to reset characters.

Conclusion:

As with RO and GE, Tree of Savior was created by a talented team with big ambitions, powerful artistic vision, but poor quality control. These are the type of creative folks who have great ideas, but don't know how to package or deliver their product professionally. This has resulted in rough launches and patchwork gameplay (especially questing) during the early days of all three games.

That being said, RO and GE both went on to be very successful MMOs. If there is one thing that could doom ToS, it's the excessive restrictions for non-premium players.

Despite its shortcomings, the game is clearly a labor of love with much content to explore. If out of nothing but nostalgia, I would still recommend giving Tree of Savior a try.
