The 2024 Video Game Journey
For the year of 2024, I'm trying to play as many games for the first time as possible in an attempt to work through my Steam and itch.io libraries. Here's my progress so far!

Last Update: December 31st

Games Played
January
#1 - Chants of Sennaar - A beautiful little game with a great ending message. I adore translation games and wish it was a bigger genre. 5/5.
#2 - Slay the Princess (VOTED BY TUMBLR!) - I did not expect to become completely obsessed with this game and its world. Hot take? The only good endings are the ones where you neither slay nor save her in the end. Reset and abandon godhood are the only true endings to me. 5/5.
January through April
#3 - Cassette Beasts - Genuinely my favorite monster tamer game I've played, and I'm not sure if it can be topped unless the studio decides to make another. Easy 5/5.
April
#4 - Unpacking - I was expecting just a fun little puzzle but instead I got a life story. Absolutely adore this little game. 5/5.
#5 - A Little to the Left - Disappointing after playing Unpacking, but a mostly-good puzzle game, especially with the DLC. 3/5.
#6 - A Tiny Sticker Tale - A cute little adventure with stickers and cute animal people, what's not to love? 4/5.
#7 - I Have No Mouth, and I Must Scream (VOTED BY TUMBLR!) - Definitely has that wonderful old adventure game stank, and I love that. I had no idea what to expect going into this, and was pleasantly surprised. 4/5.
#8 - The Murder of Sonic the Hedgehog - Literally the best Sonic game I've ever played. Barry the Quokka is phenomenal and I love every quirky little detail and dialogue choice in this game. I'd love to see this team tackle another Sonic VN, maybe a longer one? 5/5.
May
#9 - Disco Elysium (VOTED BY TUMBLR!) - Possibly my favorite RPG of all time with a fascinating world and great characters and a very realistic representation of real people, real history, and real politics in a fictional setting. 5/5
#10 - The Secret of Monkey Island - A great adventure game that's very tongue-in-cheek. 4/5
#11 - Machinika Museum - I keep playing games like this expecting them to have the same magic as The Room series. They never do. That said, this is pretty decent, and my only issue was some finicky and occasionally glitchy controls clearly meant for a mobile device. 2/5
#12 - Senna and the Forest - A short little logic puzzle game that I had some fun with. 2/5
#13 - The WereCleaner - Cute, fun, short, addictive, well-made... and FREE??? I can't wait to see what these developers make next, this was phenomenal. 5/5
#14 - Monkey Island 2: LeChuck's Revenge - A sequel so much better than the original that I can't even compare the two in terms of quality. Monkey Island 2 is simply fantastic, even the puzzle design is better. 5/5
June
#15 - Railbound - A cute little puzzle game with trains, though I was hoping the cute dog characters would be more prominent. 4/5
#16 - Stardew Valley - A wonderful little game that clearly has a lot of work and love put into it... and it's just not my kind of game. I really wanted to like it, but it just hasn't grabbed me like I hoped it would. I won't be rating this one, as it wouldn't feel fair. I'll be avoiding farming games in the future, to avoid more situations like this.
#17 - Super Lesbian Animal RPG (VOTED BY TUMBLR!) - I'm not really an RPG person. I am, however, an enjoyer of animals, lesbians, and super...ness. And my god, this game delivers. This is easily on my list of favorites. The relationships felt real and genuine, which isn't something I can say for a lot of video game relationships. 5/5
#18 - Changeling Tale - Unfortunately this visual novel didn't grab me like I hoped it would, so I didn't play very much of it. Writing this in December, and unfortunately I'm gonna have to mark this as DNF, and refrain from giving it a rating. I'll try this game again next year, when I'm not burnt out from a gaming marathon.
#19 - Dorfromantik - A fun little high score puzzle game that's really relaxing to check out every so often. 4/5
July
#20 - Buckshot Roulette - I had zero faith in this game when I first saw clips of it, but immediately got addicted. So incredibly fun, all gripes are minor. What at first seems like mostly luck turns out to be mostly strategy. 5/5
#21 - A Short Hike - A game that is simultaneously short and absolutely huge. Also, very cute and heartfelt. Would recommend. 4/5
#22 - Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door (Switch) (VOTED BY TUMBLR!) - Usually I think of Mario games as fun, but ultimately kind of empty in terms of engaging characters or story. TTYD is genuinely one of my favorite RPGs now, if that says anything. Also, because Vivian: trans rights!! 5/5
#23 - 20 Small Mazes - A cute and short series of puzzles that kept me entertained for a bit, and it's free! Would recommend. 4/5
#24 - Overboard! - A good, short murder mystery from the perspective of the murderer with an insane amount of possible routes and a genuine need for the player to manage their alibi, their time, and their goals to reach the end without going to jail, or even by sending another person to jail. Incredible amounts of replayability. 4/5
August
#25 - Ghost Trick: Phantom Detective (VOTED BY TUMBLR!) - A phenomenal puzzle mystery game with a great art style. I was NOT prepared for the last several twists this game had in store. 5/5
#26 - Minit - A cute and relatively short game with an engaging gimmick. Would recommend! 5/5
September
#27 - Pentiment (VOTED BY TUMBLR!) - Between an incredible story, incredible amounts of replayability, and an incredible attention to historical detail, this is yet another favorite of all time. 5/5
#28 - 1000xResist (VOTED BY TUMBLR!) - A unique post-apocalyptic story that grabbed me from start to end. My only real complaint is that some cutscenes would not play properly (videos vs in-engine?), which lessened my experience a lot during those periods. Otherwise, a solid 5/5.
October
#29 - FAITH: The Unholy Trinity (VOTED BY TUMBLR) - A fun and creepy game with a fantastic stylization like an old 2nd Generation video game. The third chapter is especially phenomenal. I definitely want to replay this one later for the content I missed. 5/5
November
#30 - Pokemon TCG Pocket - It's a decent mobile card collector / battler, though as usual the mobile aspects are frustrating. 4/5
#31 - My Singing Monsters Playground - I've been meaning to play for some time, but didn't because I had nobody to play with. It's a decent party game, plus a franchise I like. 4/5
