I want to love this pretty 2-player co-op game, but I found many issues with it that led me to be frustrated and annoyed instead.

- At times when you can power up, particularly auras, the game will sometimes offer you a choice between two auras that you do not have abilities for at all. You have very limited opportunities to affect this. Why? Is it supposed to be random chance that sometimes your build sucks for the run? What is the design goal for this?

- At the beginning of a run, the game offers you power-ups that you have no way to have currency for and no way to interact with. I do not understand why the designers would do this. This game is not one that gives a whole lot of power-ups, so you will not be creating a customized build -- you will be making small changes to the character you are provided. Because chances to power up are limited and you will pretty much never feel "fully powered" by the time you hit a boss, this is extra challenging. Why?

- Serious control problems. It is very easy to accidentally recycle a spell instead of taking it, because "hold" RB recycles it, and "push" RB takes it. Both myself and my partner struggled with this.

- Some enemies (flowers) don't make sense -- they are invincible and there are no instructions about how to fight them. It does not make logical sense for an apparently alive thing like a plant to be an invincible obstacle that cannot be defeated. Can you please add some kind of explanation?

The art's good, the music is good, the creation of this game was quite an accomplishment. It looks like the designers need to revisit "hard but fair" and consider that the systems they're adapting from different genres of game need to be tweaked to fit with a roguelite like this one. I have been disappointed by these issues! I think the developers would be able to make this game into a masterpiece with a little more polish.

I will definitely be keeping an eye on this game, because it has such potential, and will adjust this review in the future if possible.

i played this game on switch and didn't like it much. that was when it came out.

now, i'm playing it on my PC and i think it's incredible! they just added couch co-op as an update free of charge, and it is bangarang dude/dudette. guess what, you and your best friend can take huge bong rips and gradually customize builds, ever gaining momentum, and all the while nurturing and growing your personal cult as you see fit. yeah so i'm really digging it, i'm especially looking forward to slipping it onto easy mode when my girlfriend wants to sit on the couch and play with me (which rules), and it has a great number of accessibility options (i'm dyslexic, and it has dyslexia-friendly text. thank you so much, after a day of teaching i really just want to read in the easiest possible way so i can rest my eyes, yeah?).

Massive Monster, sirs and madames:
thank you so much for your continued work, such as just adding co-op into the game all willy-nilly for free. if you have time and ability, it would be even more next-level if you might be able to add online co-op support some day -- since i'm an adult i've noticed it can be difficult to get someone else to hang out on the couch and game with you, and i think it might increase the active player count by an even larger margin!

11/10
this is a developer that just doesn't quit improving their products

I totally oppose Sony forcing the player base to make accounts on their awful PSN service and web site, which have always provided some of the worst support in the industry. I have in the past spent hours trying to deal with their account back end for simple changes I needed to play games, and I do not consent to being forced to use this time-consuming service.

It was hard for me to accept that this game uses kernel-level anti-cheat, but I finally overlooked that because it's fun. I am really disappointed that Sony not only made this change, but made this change after I had already bought the game.

obvious influences from earthbound, yume nikki, and classic RPGs, but bringing in a lot of unique and original ideas. the timing-based assist system in battle makes combat a lot more interesting. the soundtrack rules. i love this genre, but often dread being bored by it because i've seen most of what there is to see in this era of 16-bit style RPGs -- this one is fabulous, i just love it.

this game plays very similarly to SNES' 'a link to the past', and the randomization is really well-measured. it has a lot of interesting abilities that can be effected in a variety of ways. since it's on a roguelike base, the puzzles are just a little predictable, but they're entertaining much more often than not (and when it's a simple puzzle it's not a big deal). the combat is a lot of fun. i've been having a good time playing this game both solo and with my friend -- it's especially a nice touch that the second player has as many 'rights' as the first player to interact things or alter aspects of the game, instead of being given a smaller role with fewer choices as is usual.
