Nonlocality also opens another consideration important to un-derstanding intention/prayer studies: the issue of time.Consider the retroactive intercessory prayer study carried outby Israeli immunologist Leonard Leibovici.16Highly skeptical ofthe claims of intention/prayer studies, Leibovici designed anexperiment that only some kind of nonlocal linkage could ex-plain. The very idea of such an effect challenges many assump-tions. In July 2000, Leibovici identified 3,393 adult pa-tients each of whom had suffered from a bloodstream infectionthat was detected while they were in the Rabin Medical Center,in Israel, between 1990 and 1996—that is to say,four to 10 yearsearlier.All of these individuals were long out of the hospital.These 3,393former hospital patientswere randomized into twopopulations; 1,691 were assigned to the intervention treatmentgroup and 1,702 to the control group. The treatment group wasthe focus of therapeutic intention in the form of prayer, which“was said for the well being and full recovery of the interventiongroup.”16The study discovered that “length of stay in hospital andduration of fever were significantly shorter in the intervention group than in the control group (P.01 andP.04, respec-tively).”16

Leibovici concluded, “Remote, retroactive interces-sory prayer said for a group is associated with a shorter stay inhospital and shorter duration of fever in patients with a blood-stream infection and should be considered for use in clinicalpractice.”16 For this study to have worked, it seems that therapeutic intention from the “future” must have affected the “past”when it wasthe presentto produce a biased outcome—not tohave changedthe past, but to have produced the original effect in the firstinstance. No local explanation can subsume what happened.(A possible alternative nonlocal explanation is based on de-cision augmentation theory [DAT],which we shall examineshortly.) Leibovici’s study is an extreme example of an intentionstudy because of its retrocausal essence, but all intention studiesmust consider that intention is not blocked by time.
