Probably the best unfinished game I've ever played. You play half as Nero and the other half as Dante but the Dante missions are just Nero missions but in reverse, even the same bosses ( which there aren't too many.. )

Now, that is a valid criticism but it isn't as bad as people say. It makes perfect sense in the story and it's not a 4th wall breaking self contradicting type of thing. You kill a boss as Nero, he gets revived and even stronger so Dante has to kill him again. There are new enemies, cutscenes, weapons, paths and such. You don't get bored and the Dante missions are shorter in length and harder. This is Devil May Cry after all, it's not a game where you finish a campaign as fast as possible and stop playing, you're going to want to replay over and over unlocking higher and higher difficulties and eventually playing the Bloody Palace which is a set of empty levels for you to fight enemies on progressing further and further and being paired up against tougher enemies. Finishing Bloody Palace is really hard so you're going to be stuck playing this for a while.

Nero as the new guy has some really unique abilities like his motorcycle revving sword and Devil Bringer and the former of which is one of the best mechanics in the whole franchise. But then you get to Dante, the most complex ( hard ) and fun character in all of gaming. Multiple melee and ranged weapons, variety of combos and most importantly style switching, which makes him essentially 4 characters in one. He does seem very intimidating to play for the first few missions because of all of that but pulling his combos of is one of the most satisfying things ever.

Also special edition gives us 3 new playable characters, Vergil, Trish and Lady, none of who feel forced and shoehorned in, each of them ( and especially Vergil ) has depth and a completely different playstyle

With all that being said, 5 is better in every single way, and that isn't a negative criticism about 4 but a positive one about 5 which I consider perfect.
