Easily the best of the other Total War games. I wouldn't even say it's a fair comparison.

I refuse to thumbs down this due to DLC. This is a review of the game, not their policies. You want to know if you should by this game? If you like this style of game and like fantasy or Warhammer itself, then yes, get it immediately. If you want to get your feet wet with this style of game, I'd say no. If you want to try out a Total War game for the first time I'd recommend Shogun 2 as it's usually a lot cheaper (17 bucks at the time of writing this at the Christmas sale for the base game and all the DLC) and will definitely get you prepared for what Total War is or save you the cash if you end up hating it.

The positives. The grand campaign is absolutely fun. I have played it a lot now as almost all of my time is spent doing single player campaigns. Whenever a new DLC is released that has a new race, the grand campaign is now different with the new area opening up. The replay value alone on just the single player experience is extremely high. The multiplayer battles are very fast usually lasting less then 10 minutes and are quite furious. The DLC I see as a positive, at least the more expensive ones that add complete new races to the game. Other RTS games that have DLC, don't add complete new factions to the game as a small add-on. Take SC2 for example, we paid $40 (twice) for an expansion that added a very short campaign, some new maps, and each faction got 2-3 new units. Compare this to the DLC for Wood Elves or Beastmen which added a complete new faction, new campaign addition due to new areas opening upo, and an extra mini-campaign. Also the free DLC's are a welcome addition to the game along with the support that the Workshop is giving us. The following negatives, while longer than the positives, simply do not beat out the positives for this game.

The negatives to the game are as follows. The ladder system is completely horrible. It's not even worth playing online battles (single player, 2v2 and up is fine because it seems to be hard for them to sync up the disconnect) because of the cheat the higher ranked players do they disconnect which causes them to not lose rank where if I lose a game, I drop 40+ ranks. CA really needs to fix this because it has made many of the good players stop playing on the ladder. The next negative I have is how the grand majority of all vortex spells simply either do not cause damage or have the potential to work if RNG is on your side, but just a random change in directions and end up doing no damage. I also dislike the very limited way to play Dwarfs as they have no cavalry at all and tend to just do the Dwarf thing by boxing up and shooting you. I understand that Dwarfs did not have cavalry on the Tabletop, but they need something. Either open up Kislev bear cavalry as an ally or just let them get a squad of bear cavalry and have it with limited model numbers as a large unit or get some Dogs of War and open them up as an ally to every faction. I strongly dislike is the imbalance of flying goon squads and the ability to cycle charge from the sky over and over again with no cooldown. If flying units had to be grounded for 10 seconds and that their charge wouldn't reset until they were airborn for 10 seconds, this would easily be fixed. I do wish that the 2 DLC's for regiments of renown for the Dwarfs, Empire, Vampires, and Orcs were free instead of 8 bucks for the 2 groups as this part did seem like a cash grab and you are significantly worse in multiplayer for not having them. My last gripe and biggest complaint is that the campaign doesn't feel like a narative at all. If you play the Tabletop, they've really been pushing the idea of "Forging a narative" and I wish that it was happening here. It is certainly a blast to play in terms of strategy, I just wish that it had a bigger story element to it other than at certain turn numbers a set event happens.

I'm a big fan of the Dawn of War francise. I'll admit that I prefer Dark Crusader over this as the addition of flying units didn't work very well and the writers kinda messed up on the campaign, but the modding community is actually pretty good! The Titanium Wars mod actually takes away the flyers and adds a lot of new units making the game very difficult and refreshed the entire campaign as the new units really bring a new experience. I think that any person that enjoys the RTS genre would enjoy this game regardless of it's sometimes silly pathing.
