Car Mechanic Simulator 2018 is zen. It's best when appreciated as a relaxing, simple car repair and restoration sandbox. It's a sandbox because it doesn't meet one essential criterion of a game: you can't lose. Hence sandbox. It ostensibly restricts the player by using money, but I can't see the poitn of money in the game because it rewards the player too liberally and lacks money sinks to offset the absurd payments for your works. That might even be a good thing depending on what experience you want.

It's difficulty to describe CMS 2018's gameplay since it's unlike any other game I've played (excepting CMS 2015). I'd recommend you check out some gameplay videos to get a feel for whether this is something you'd enjoy.

The Good

  • Unique game play.
  • On-going development and improvements from the devs.
  • Could become great with the right improvements and a lot of work.
  • Devs communicate with the community.
  • No microtransactions.
  • No lootboxes. There are random reward "cases" granted after complete some orders, but these are just in-game rewards earned from gameplay. This is not the sadly too-common in-game gambling you see in other games.

The Bad

  • Devs don't know how cars actually drive.
  • Terrible car physics mean collecting cool cars is less fun because driving them is an unpleasant experience.
  • Wretched controller support. Other than driving, I can't tolerate using the controller.
  • Interface is irritating. Lots of quality-of-life features to avoid tedious and repetitive tasks are absent.
  • Too much cash with not enough to spend it on means money rapidly becomes meaningless.

Many tools and features are unlocked with skill points. For instance, you upgrade your garage with skill points rather than money. The latter would have made a lot more sense to me given that you only buy parts and cars — which allows you to complete orders or sell restored automobiles, which nets huge profits. Gaining skill points is a bit grindy at times because you have to earn dozens of them to, for instance, unlock the paint shop.

I'm happy with my purchase. I have fun. If you're looking for COD or Forza, this ain't it. If you're looking for something different and chill, you should consider this one.
