i decided to do a blind playthrough only taking the hardest paths kind of by accident. the game is good but wow does it kind of want you to die bad

but i refuse to shoot kids through the canon. no matter what you try, video game, i aint doing that

Absolutely abysmal port. Frequent crashes and bugs. Save your money.

works great on steam deck.

it's a refined and iterated take of ender lilies, which was (rightfully) well received. if you liked it, the best time was to pick it up cheaper during access. the second best time is now that it's fully released.

the best advice i can give is to try the demo. it's extremely fine, i guess, the game handles well in terms of gameplay. it doesnt try to reinvent the wheel but it also doesn't try to go on forever, it's very clear cut what you have to do instead of letting you have a go at a run with set bosses, floors and such like its contemporaries.

a cautious recommendation?

as others mentioned, this version has pathfinding issues

other than that, the game is very raw. being the predecessor to aoe2, where they greatly expanded upon a lot of ideas found in this one, a lot of things do not feel as thought out (namely, where you research tech is a bit confusing if you go backwards, amongst other things)

i do still think it's one of the greats of the RTS genres, but if you want something a little less raw, the return of rome DLC in AoE2 DE kind of covers a lot of bases, in a better wrapped package

that said, this one has more campaigns if you want the full AoE1 experience

very bold way to take AoE 2 forward in terms of expansion content. while part of me is slightly frustrated that new civilizations are starting to break the established mold, part of me also kind of enjoys the novelty.

the story presentation is excellent, and it's essentially the length of 3-4 regular campaigns baked into one, that has some replay value because of choices you can make.

a good addition to a 20+ year old game, and one that makes me curious where they will take further expansions.

the gameplay loop is solid, but the balance is all over the place.

once you finish a run, you unlock the possibility of doing hard mode bosses and minibosses, which will mostly kick your ass.

to offset that, you can arguably get stupid strong from the meta progression, but once again, that is poorly balanced, due to being an apple arcade title ported off it. unfortunately, i can only assume that they want to keep people hooked because there's a *lot* of meta progression, that require you to run the game several several times before you can make a dent into it to comfortably tackle the hard mode stuff and extra difficulty modifiers to progress.

you *can* still progress hard mode without investing too much into the progression but it is kind of a chore because enemies get massively boosted HP. as i said, all around whack balancing to keep people hooked to the apple subscription.

it's a bit wonky, and is somewhat carried by the voice acting and the general presentation of the game. i would recommend it on sale.

historically mahjong has only served to crush the human spirit. while this is no different, at least big hand score big number

i love the simple aesthetics of the dungeon crawling. incredible focus on the play, with tons of options for party building, and a lot of mechanics to fiddle with.

probably would help if you are into touhou, but not a prerequisite. just pure gameplay fun.

with that said, extremely hard game. boss fights are somewhat puzzle-ish. nothing insurmountable, but you will need to fiddle about to achieve victory. the game will not hand it on a silver platter.

the gameplay is fine but the incessant chatter got on my nerves. really really really bad. still leaving it as a recommend but i wish i could leave it as a "eh". the game is good i just wish it could get to breath, there was as much yapping as there was gameplay in the first zone. i get that there's a story (using that word loosely here) but damn.
