i thoroughly enjoyed my time with sea of stars. the highlights of the show are absolutely the visuals and the music. what holds back the whole thing is the story, especially the two main characters. i also found the combat enjoyable - pulling combos off feels satisfying and i like the visual flair of every move. i think it does the "inputs on move" type of combats good enough.

there are actual genuine issues with the story (that i do not feel like detailing, especially since there's a lot of thought pieces about it out there) but also, i played the game to the end and did a bit more than i thought i would. i have played boring, and truly bad video games. in its whole run time it did not come close to that personally.

i will end that bit of criticism with the following : if you play games and all you do is compare them to each other for the rest of time you will be miserable and seek a high you might never get again, instead of enjoying a game for what it is.

it sounds like cope, i guess in part it is because i am defending something flawed i suppose? it doesnt reach the heights of the genre it sold itself to try to, nor does it come close. but also i was *entertained*, for the whole run time. i liked the world that i played through in sea of stars. there are a decent amount of games that have compelled me to finish them because i truly wanted to rather than finishing them to simply seethe whole package. for me personally that's good enough praise for the game.

i will also say i am biased because i really like the messenger and this game (even if not sold as is) expands on that whole world.

i don't think it redefines the genre. i don't think it will magically capture how classic rpgs feel for everyone. criticism of the game is valid. but i had a lot of fun, and i think that's what counts. it's flawed but it's fun.

there's stuff to like here, but honestly? go play freedom planet 2. this is very rough on the edges - very long stages, lots of bosses, and the traces of a team trying to make their own game spun from working on sonic fan games.

the end result is fine... for 2014. i couldn't finish it because i tried it after FP2, which is a game that nails what they were actually trying to go for here. lots of rough edges that just ultimately culminated in something i did not want to finish.

still recommending it because i do think it's worth a look, if only to glance at the ambitiousness the end result is obviously trying to live up to.

soundtrack is great, though, and story is fine, but not necessary to play the sequel

i like it a lot, but it is designed like an old-school NES game so it feels like bashing my head against the wall at times. Not an easy game!

I think runs and stages go entirely too long, upgrade paths feel a bit wonky and i don't think the challenges are super fun to do.

Only recommend if you crave a survivors-like

its called 20 minutes till dawn cause thats what you realize the time is when youre done playing. Decent survivors clone.

the fact that ms pacman isnt in the game gave me a cluster headache!!

joking aside it's a mostly fine arcade game. it does not really allow for any sort of skill expression past rote memorization, and to get the top score you will need a bit of luck as the ghost trains can get hectic. it's fine.

i like olivia
