are there better strategy games out there? probably. was this fun to dip my toes into? absolutely. there's a certain amount of jankiness but it's just... fun? had a decent time trying my hand at various things and progressing through the story. decent options for shipbuilding too. will i play more of it? probably not, i'd like to focus more on other strategy games, but i'd say it still warrants a look

aggressively okay. a good array of spells and ideas, but only 3 bosses in a normal run and 3 survival stages is... rough. especially at that price point. i hate poking fun of games for the prices, but it's hard for a player to NOT compare that metric. and for that price? even in the twin stick genre there's a lot that you can get for much cheaper. alright as part of a bundle, i didn't look down on it, but man it is a bit bare bones.

it's... fine. my biggest problem with this being a shovel knight spin off is that it makes me want to play pocket dungeon. yes i know they're 2 COMPLETELY different genres, but pocket dungeon knocks it out of the park while this one kind of limps to the finish line?

the gameplay loop is fine, it handles alright, it's just missing a little spark for me to truly enjoy it, and i'm not quite sure what it is. characters design are on point, the knight's moveset is good, i just... wish i liked it more.

this is a thumbs down that's somewhat a thumbs up i guess? i might eventually get back to this review and flip it to positive. i guess, in a way, the fact that the game has me this conflicted is a good thing... time will tell. i still think you should play this game.

edit like months later : you know what. i guess i like this game. it's still a relatively hard sell because of how different it is but it grew on me. leaving my original review above as-is.

off the bat the biggest complaint is that there's a lot of fancy graphical options turned on that make the game look and run insanely poorly

past that, levels are essentially a big playground, with a decent movement system to back it up. unfortunately, the game feels really tedious to get around and play? the hub worlds are kind of annoying to navigate, the levels at times feel haphazardly thrown together... there's a good foundation, but struggled to hold my attention

when i play im like that picture of the guy in a wheelchair but its ok this is a good video game please play it
