I bought this game, which I will be refunding, to specifically leave a review:

From the bottom of my heart (and for the nth time), ♥♥♥♥ EA lol

It sucks to see a game series made with a lot of heart and soul, a game series that has a cult following/active fanbase still, a game series with a COMPLETED design bible for the third game, be completely ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ shafted by EA.

And don't you just love it when a game company says they dont care about Alice and that theyll never let you make another game in a series youve put your heart into for 20 years, but refuses to sell you the I.P?

American McGee quit the industry as a result of this
♥♥♥♥ EA, broke McGee's heart and killed his magnum opus :(

Full text of McGee’s update reads as follows:

Dear Insane Children,

Over the past few years, your support has made possible a constant stream of creative output by a team of artists, writers, designers, modelers, and producers. That output resulted in the "Alice: Asylum" Design Bible - a 414pg PDF containing the complete vision for a 3rd Chapter in Alice's video game adventures.

Shortly after the completion of the Design Bible, I resumed talks with Electronic Arts regarding our efforts to get a new game made. They were presented with the Design Bible and a Production Plan (produced in collaboration with Virtuos Games) outlining the schedule, budget, team, and design for the new game's production.

After several weeks of review, EA has come back with a response regarding funding and/or licensing for "Alice: Asylum"

On the question of funding, they have ultimately decided to pass on the project based on an internal analysis of the IP, market conditions, and details of the production proposal. On the question of licensing, they replied that "Alice" is an important part of EA’s overall game catalog, and selling or licensing it isn’t something they’re prepared to do right now.

At this point, we have exhausted every option for getting a new "Alice" game made. With those answers from EA, there is no other way forward with the project. As such, we will be hibernating this Patreon page and related pre-production activities. The content will remain in place but we'll no longer present options for funding "Alice: Asylum" efforts via this (or any other) platform.

"Alice: Asylum" is at an end.

This game would have ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ slapped, but EA has no vision beyond selling the most poorly optimized games possible (that they will never fix) and selling a million DLCs per game.

I kid you not I just did the math and to even own every Sims 4 expansion would run you $600. With the rest of the DLCs it would be ANOTHER $750 on top of that.

I absolutely love this game and think it deserves FAR more recognition than it's gotten,

HOWEVER!
upon trying to replay it a year later, I'm experiencing an awful bug that keeps locking my camera upwards every once in a while but especially at ladders (of which there are many), and it's made the game practically unplayable.

Im using an xbox controller btw, and definitely not the only one having this issue sadly.

Please fix this.

If you don't like reading and walking and slowly reading and slowly walking then this isnt for you
If you do like magical realism and esoteric, story driven games about the generational effects of poverty on rural America in a world that has moved on from rural America... then..... maybe this one is for you.

It's beautiful but slow, and when one review called it "interactive modern art" they were right--
not everyone will find it fun or find meaning in it but some very much will.

A charming and romantic little puzzle game with gorgeous visuals and aesthetic.
I found the puzzles to be very fun, and while not impossible, they sometimes made me really think, and were pretty unique in design. Definitely the highlight of the experience and worth the play if you want some out-of-the-box thinking.
However, traversal in the game was ridiculously slow and tedious, every ladder climb was a complete chore, and having to trek back and forth between clues was frustrating.
and while the plot was sweet, I didnt find I really cared much for the story overall, though I suspect most would.

Overall, a nice little gem that I think is worth the play if you want a stunning game that will give you a bit of a challenge.

100% the lovechild of "Little Nightmares" and "Brothers: A Tale of Two Sons" (and maybe Limbo)

The atmosphere of this creepy little fairy-tale is immaculate, the detail to the world and its creatures is obvious.

My complaints however would have to be that there isnt much gameplay at all (mostly walking sim), besides the bosses. The gameplay itself doesnt really adequately prepare you for the sudden difficulty spikes that are the bosses... not that theyre particularly difficult, just different from the rest of the game's core gameplay, which is mostly inane and kinda boring.
Really, the game is about the spectacle and the vibe of the world around you rather than having a game that is super fun or intuitive to play.

Not to mention the world and level design are INSANELY linear. Like, no freedom to explore or choose a different path beyond something that is already set.

Overall, it is a beautiful and creepy little game, that maybe has a few too many reviews praising it as nearly flawless. However, it's easy and gorgeous enough to absolutely make it worth playing at least once anyway.

(Also what's up with the "no deaths no restarts" achievement, its a ♥♥♥♥ move to include it and it's nothing like any of the other achievements. Total BS to attempt)

I am ridiculously excited for what Frictional Games puts out next because wow this did not disappoint. I really thought the Amnesia series was done for, and was really really okay with that (almost happy even), but this game surprised me!

I'd kill for a future game with gameplay elements from Bunker, but a story like Soma's

Definitely in my top 3 scariest games of all time
