I'm 20+ hours in, and not even halfway through the story, and it's safe to say that Yakuza's story is a whole lot better than a lot of games that are double or triple the price. The fighting feels amazing, and there's so much to do in the open world. While some of the cutscenes such as the side missions aren't made that well, the really cinematic ones that are closely related to the main story are AMAZING. Yakuza is also a bit of a real life simulator, but turned up to 10, since everything is super dramatic (For instance, answering a phone call in the telephone booths). Buy this game! The story is brilliant, and even the side quests (even though some aren't voiced).

Great Storyline? Check
Great open world? Check
No Story Mode DLC? CHECK
An Online mode so toxic and full of modders, that's also really difficult to grind (and did I mention, pay to win?) ? ALSO CHECK
Mundane tasks such as grinding those awful sell missions is (somewhat) enjoyable with friends, but it absolutely sucks if you're a solo player. The toxic online community and modders do put me off sometimes, but the only reason I come back to this game is the fact that I can just screw around with my friends. I'd say this game is worthit for the story alone. Even though the online mode is nowhere close to being as polished as the story, you're getting hours and hours of enjoyment (and boredom cuz of the grinding). I have almost everything I want in Online mode, and now I'm just waiting for the next DLC. I've gone from playing this game almost every day, to barely playing it at all. The only reason I have for hopping on sometimes is to win the podium vehicle in the casino, and just drive around since I have almost nothing to do! The selling missions now feel like a chore, having done them so many times already. Sometimes, I just log on to help my friends with their grinding. I still play some of the story mode side missions, but it's gotten kinda old given that I completed this game several times on PS3, and I've one all the strangers and freaks missions.
In conclusion, you're DEFINITELY getting your money's worth, even if you're buying this game purely for the story. I would recommend the online mode, but just mentally prepare yourself as you're going to get blown up by oppressors and other players. Eventually though, you'll be the one wielding the oppressor.

Just bought the game a couple of days ago, and it's amazing! It's fairly non-linear, and pretty damn funny. I'm not sure if it's considered an open world game, but it sure feels more open than some open world games I've tried. Even though the game is quite old, it's definitely aged really well. The art style is pretty iconic, and it's pretty fun with friends. Oh, and who could dismiss the amazing character introduction sequences?! Really glad I bought this game.
The only gripe I can think of is some areas being inaccessibledue to "invisible barriers", and how you end up dying when you drive/fall off a ledge (when you supposedly take "no fall damage")
Overall though, it's an amazing game and it'll have you hooked on it for hours.
