TLDR; If you're interested, try the demo. It'll tell you more than I can in a review.

If you like Wolfgun's music, you'll probably gel well with this game. It's a peculiarly beautiful game about getting plucked out of your starship and being thrust into endless battle against starborn creatures from before time by an omnipresent godlike entity.

There is no failure in this game, nor death, as those concepts weren't a good fit for this reality.
I love this game's simple controls and quite deceptively deep combo and scoring system. If you take a hit in anything but the final fight of a run your score will be halved, but if you Perfect Dodge, your combo multiplier goes up, and you deal damage to enemies around you. Imperfect Dodges are still important for avoiding damage if you care about score. I think my highest score as of writing this review is somewhere around 231 million. ♥♥♥♥ adds up fast if you're gunning for it.

Each run (so far) has a different character, or 'Concept' as Tutorial Wolfgun put it. I haven't gotten to use all of them yet, but so far some have better combo potential than others. You get a primary fire button, secondary fire button, dodge, and movement keys with an infinite jump (sometimes a descend key). It's got simple controls and it's complex to master, similar to my other favorite simplistic arcade platformer, Rain World. Combat is a conversation, this game encourages you to listen to audio cues and respond confidently to them with Perfect Dodges (PDs) and your own attacks. This gives the game a noticeable ebb and flow, unless you're in FOCUS mode. Focus mode is an intense gamut of constant enemies and attacks.

It's definitely worth the $13 USD, as it's basically like buying a wolfgun album with a game attached to it. If you're not sure, though, get it if it goes on sale. Oh yeah. Turn down your game audio from your volume manager. There's none built into the game, which is certainly a choice, and this game can get really loud in the cutscenes and boss fights.

DLC's been recovered from the greasy state it released in (thanks to the greaseman himself, Randy) and pretty much all the bugs that existed before are gone.

It's a bit empty, lacking a lot of the interesting maps, dense anomalies and story. It's more realistic to how real life Chernobyl is, but even the story is mid. It literally is just "what happened to the military helicopters?" and big surprise it's just "there are anomalies in the air and the monolith cultists shot them down." and the entire game is just dealing with that. I do like the side-stories though. Wonderful line delivery at some points, like in a B movie kind of way. Mods like Call of Chernobyl, Misery and Road to the North helped me enjoy it a bit more. I wish I could give a "eh" neutral rating.

In just over an hour of discovering the Psychic Glimmer, I had killed 10 psychics who were hunting me down and encoded the psionic bits of at least one of their psyches onto the holographic boundary of my own psyche. +1 Ego. Lmao. I love this game genuinely.

I think the main thing I like in Odyssey is Exobiology. I've never had any problems with bugs on E:D. Like literally never, and I have pretty poor specs. The only problems I've had are with Frontier rolling back events and mostly screwing over Canonn Research Group and people who want to research Klaxian and Orestrian Thargoids like me. Like I straight up do not know if there are any identifiable families of Thargoids anymore. I'm sure someone will tell me 'ough those aren't real or canon adn just from the books!!' Anyways I can't set a neutral recommendation so I'll just thumbs it up.

Heh, I only knew Cereal Soup on Steam, but I was recommended it by a friend I met randomly on DayZ. He's a good dude. Anyway, I know the hate is hard to look past even with all the good. Our minds are wired to pay attention to the bad things, not the good. The bad things are a threat. But.. I believe your game is beautiful. It surely was beautiful, whenever you consider to be the prime. But I only knew this game as of maybe a year ago. I enjoyed it even with nothing to do. And I'll still enjoy the character creator. Smile not just because it's over, but because of the memories. ♥
