You can queue for free matches or make a custom game and enjoy the game for free with up to two other players on the "The First Island" map. If you want to play as a total of 4 or more, or simply want another map, you have to buy an expansion.
Servers work fine except for some random reconnects that I tend to get but they only take like 5 seconds really. It's really fun to play if you like board games. Only problem I have are the die odds which are pretty weird considering I had games where 6,7 and 8 where the least rolled numbers.

bungie really ♥♥♥♥♥♥ the game up at the end of 2020. they vaulted way too much for no real reason and just giving everyone 1050 equip at the start of the game seems pretty dumb.
