Early Access Review
Besides the typical trends of -INDIE- -ROGUELIKE- -PIXEL GRAPHICS- that games these days try and cash in on, this game is actually pretty fun. It felt reminiscent of Daggerfall's dungeons or early dungeon crawling games of the 90s except with modern controls and pacing. This isn't a turn based roguelike, which is hilarious refreshing in what is one of my favourite genres now bloated with similar games trying to cater to people who only care about what I said above (memes indie 16-bit roguelikevmetrovai- blah blah blah etc etc).

The aesthetics are crisp and colorful and some weapons feel weighty and it's very satisfying knocking out monsters or pesky mages into blood pudding. Also traps in the dungeons effect the bad dudes and I spent more than I'd like to admit trailing bandits into a spike pit.

When you slap people's nuts a little too hard but not enough to put them down, they'll run off and try and flank/sneak up on you, which is cool.

I put all my stats into defence and attack and wore big platemail armor. This worked pretty well until a bunch of spooky liches tore me a new one with magic while I was huffed and puffed trying to get away.

Only downer is it's an early access game and could use some content or fleshing out. I made it down 7th or so floor before being lich target practice (apparently this is the last floor?).

This game is under 10$ CDN, how can you say NO to this.

I also smashed a bandit with a sword in the face with a hammer and it made a sound like he pooped himself while he flew off a cliff into lava from the blow.

I give it 6 green potions out of cheese piece.

YUM.

An excellent albeit barebones RPG from Spiderweb Software. While Avernum 4 was super difficult and some what hard to follow, in this iteration you play as Empire's scouts, and then the fun really begins.

These games are difficult, combat wise you'll get your teeth kicked in if you're not careful or prepared. I had a warrior, an archer, a mage and a priest. Having this setup was instrumental to my easier playthrough.

You must be aware of what you pick and their stats, as experience may be gained or lost and handicaps and advantages can make battles hard.

Exploration was just supreme. It's the best part of this game. Stumbling upon a crypt or a thief's hiding hole and the brief description was the most enjoyable aspect of this game. So many times did I just clean out the entire map to get the best items and supplies (and really, you'll need to!).

The choices in this game are supriginsly abundant and there are some nice rewards depending on your stance. You must be careful, because some choices may make settlements hate your guts.

This game does drag only because the combat is so difficult and punishing. Never did I feel like I reigned supreme until I started abusing the game specifically to give me an advantage. When I finished the game, just over forty hours came up and I felt exhausted. It will be a while until I move on to the next one.

Comparing it to 4, I'd say there's a bit more to take care of and the characters and enviroments (well everything looks pretty plain so lets call it regions instead of enviroments) were much more interesting. The challenge areas were far more challenging then 4 and there was a lot of super ancient evils to give the blade.

There were also a lot of well written quests and dialog. I remember a band of bandits that use a woman to lure you in and after you slay them all she begs for mercy. If only she was so lucky, and when I sealed her fate she burst into tears, and into gibs as she took fireballs to the face.

For the value of this game, I'd say as long as you can tolerate the archaic graphics, controls and resolution (I had to play on a smaller resolution on my 1920x1080 - you'll be in for one treat.

There is also a great walkthrough online for this game, and dont be afraid to cheat so long as it makes you progress the story.

Amazing id gameplay that still stands up to this day. Feels responsive and ageless. The later levels become super tedious and boring; which are mostly Sandy's levels. A must play, and with a source port 1080p at 1500+ frames it's a good experience that lives up to the expectations and standards of today.

This is the best modern building sim that's out there. Amazing, and the fact there's a workshop only means that the content will get better and more polished.

I built a dam and slapped a few sewage pumps behind it. The banks werent steep and it began to flood hot chocolate all over my residential areas. Little Jimmy and his dog started to stroll around in the delicious dookie until it went over there heads.

Jimmy's mother tweeted about the pumps, and never saw her son again.

I also renamed a hotdog truck. Wieners on wheels incase you had to know.

Fun game, and it's 30$.

Feels responsive and looks good. Eastern Europeans (Can't remember if they're out of Russia or Ukraine so please pardon my ignorance) doing french voice acting is pretty bad but can be disabled, the missions so far were pretty great, lots of infantry on a single map. Little to no grenades in early missions, must flank and be careful. Artillery and Mortars are broken atm (too accurate and crazy fast fire rates). This whole game is a 15$ package, and with that price and the concepts and the people behind it, really deserves your money and gratitiude. Keep it up bestway.

I enjoyed the game, but not as much as I was hyped. Please note, I RECOMMEND this game at a lower price, but at full? God no.

I felt there wasn't much I haven't already done in other post apoclyptic games, or RPGs for that matter. The story was good all the way up until the end, where it fell flat and felt very rushed. The fact that the main antagonist was recycled once more from the previous iteration was neither suprising and also extremely eye rolling.

The freedom of 'choice' seemed very bare bones, making me feel that there was only a few ways to solve problems with each branch just ending up at the same point. It suffers from the 'amusement park' effect of most RPGs, (which needs to stop). Where, sure there are many interesting areas to see, but once you've more or less tied everything up at that area, there is no need to return to it, ever. There is no real sense of a vibrant enviroment around you, you just go from A to B to C to D, only really back and forth to replenish/sell/top up your water and some few quests. There wasn't much dungeon raiding or exploration, I may have missed a few - and if I did that's on me.

I thought all of Los Angeles was super rushed and pretty crummy, with exception of Rodia which was kinda when I got my second wind, only to be really kinda drained by the lack of really anything interesting going on. With each stop after rodia easily tied up and finished within a hour. The last two hours of the game dragged on with combat and really bad black and white choices.

As when I played it (I hope it gets patched for whomever is interested) a lot of the sidequests were really broken or dead ended if you did specific things in a different order. Which sucks if you have no idea - I would make sense if it was specific to something you dead, but sometimes it uses a character that isn't relevent anymore, but since you already did something related to another quest with them, their dialog wheel is a bust. (McDade im thinking of you as well as Maggie).

The combat was awful, straight awful for the first bit - however once I got so overpowered from overlevelling (due to so much travel and map combing for areas) you smash through confrontations, and after doing massive criticals did I really start getting excited to do battle. Once you hoard RPG/Rocket launchers, did it really get fun too. Only problem I have is the weapon jamming was pretty broken. I jammed so many times, I never had a real issue with missing, I would just CONSTANTLY jam, it only made fights more longer, I was never really in danger.

----------

The only really things that was consistent and what I enjoyed, was the followers. They always had something relative to say, and for every quest/event etc. Scotchmo and the tryhard rebellious LA punk were my favourite. They all have little bios you can read. There are some good dialog trees but they are few and far between, I again felt that with all of the chest thumping and crazy black or white decisions you had to make, people kinda didn't do anything about it unless it was to -try- and kill you, face forward. Which is a dumb way to resolve anything.

I did enjoy the customization of my characters, and the idea of spreading out all of your wanted perks over 4 characters. I could roleplay 4 different people rather then being a jack of all trades. Which was a shame, because nobody really noticed or reacted specifically to any individual of my group specifically. It might've well of just been one person, shame.

Overall I'd rank it a 6.5/10. It started off strong but towards the end I was writing it off. I really love the post apocalyptic genre, and I could never get sick of it. The controls and interface were crisp and steady. Unity was a poor choice, but acceptable. I just hope they do not get discouraged or blame fans if they didn't enjoy their return. I hope there is turn based wasteland game to come.

Only buy on sale. Nice attempt, but it will be unlikely that I ever play through it again, unlike the Fallouts, Stalkers and other RPGs.

(On a plus side, this is a kickstarter game that WASN'T a complete write off, props to inXile).
