Early Access Review
~ I have seen what the darkness does, say goodbye to who I was. ~

I started playing once early access hit earlier this year, and I was quickly drawn in. So much so, that I found my everyday life was affected. My thoughts were of the Louisiana bayou. I had freshly ignited passion regarding the Old West and the technology of the time. Every other game I would play, I'd try to create a hunter-like character. I even dream of Hunt at night; that I'm a rugged steely-eyed bushman tracking the most dangerous game known to man in the moonlit swamps of Louisiana. Crytek have outdone themselves in creating an immersive and captivating world, and on that merit alone, I can't rate Hunt high enough. But you don't want to hear anymore about my fantasies, you want to know what's good with this game.

The Good
  • The game looks absolutely gorgeous, even on lowest settings.
  • The sound design is top-notch, from twangy western-style tunes, to snappy and crisp gunshots, to haunting tones emanating from supernatural portals to other dimensions.
  • The premise is totally original, and works very well with the core gameplay mechanics.
  • Fans of survival horror and/or battle royale-style multiplayer both have plenty to see with this title. The mechanics of both genres are finely integrated with each other, creating a one-of-a-kind experience.
  • The hunter level-up system is interesting, albeit very high-risk/high-reward.
  • The weapons and equipment are all period and immaculately animated.
  • Although the lore is little at the moment, it's riveting to delve into, and adds a lot to the feel of the game.

    The Bad
  • Gameplay is clunky at first, but once mastered becomes very tight and responsive.
  • This game is very, VERY difficult. You will die a lot in the beginning, as the learning curve is quite steep. However, once you reach the top, you'll enjoy the view.

    The Ugly
  • This game is likely to stay in early access for a long time, a year easily. But the devs are very active and interact with the community more than most studios today.
  • The hardcore nature may turn people away. This game is harder than a Fromsoft title, and very unforgiving.
  • Optimization still has a ways to go. My rig has all high-end components, and I still stutter from time to time.

So what's the bottom line? In all honesty, I can't give one. I love the game for my own reasons, but objectively speaking, it still has a ways to go. I can absolutely recommend it, but it'll take patience and understanding to get 100% of your money's worth out of this game.

If you want to wait until it has more polish, no one would blame you. However, if you want to support the devs and be involved with the game's growth, then the Association is waiting for you to give your John Hancock. Wealth and horror await you in the Bayou...

This is Diablo 4 as far as I'm concerned.
