I don't write reviews very often, but I feel the need to in this case as a long time fan of Artix Entertainment games. I have supported AE on kickstarter and have followed many of the updates as time went on, I waited to write this review as I know developing a game takes time and the small team making the game is learning as they go.

I am going to break this review down into 4 sections: my thoughts, current state of the game, the possible future, and suggestions.

My thoughts:
I have played and still play aqw to this day and have spent a ton of money supporting what I think is a game with massive potential. The core mechanics of aqw is to do quests, fight monsters, and level up to obtain more powerful classes. The complexity of the fights are simplistic, but are still engaging as some bosses require multiple people to defeat. The art is amazing for a 2d flash game, its some of the best you'll ever find in my opinion. The game rewards hardcore players with gear that provides bonuses like a weapon that does 51% more dmg to all monsters. The end game is very grindy, but makes up for it by rewarding the player with amazing gear.

However, the longer I played I realized that I wanted more complexity in regards to the classes as the gameplay loop became repetitive and I had nearly collected all the cosmetics and gear I had wanted. When I first heard that AE was realesing a new game, this time a 3d one, I got really excited at the possibilities of new class mechanics, some that could be complex and add creative new ways to play the game.

Current state of the game:
The gameplay is level up and rank up your classes to become more powerful. The more powerful you become the more classes you can unlock. Each class has 5 main skills (cross skill included) alongside a few passive upgrades. The gameplay loop over time becomes repetitive as 5 skills is not much to experiment with, fights are simplistic as the player can spam skills and still come out on top in most fights. The trade skills are not worth going for as they do not benefit the player in game in any meaningful way. For example, old school runescape is a game made by a small team and leveling certain skills unlocks shortcuts in game to help the player bypass certain areas improving gameplay. The social aspect of the game is hurt by the low population playing the game as many old areas will be barren, I feel as if veteran players should have an incentive to go back to old areas. The content updates are a bit too slow, I have been waiting for housing to come for years. I know the development of a game can take time, but with no progress plan to show players and reassure them it feels like I am waiting for something that may never happen. I am not going to talk much about the free to play aspect of the game as I think AE is doing a decent job at making it fair for f2p players.

I love AE as small indie companies with heart seldom exist anymore, but I feel like the game is falling short of what it could be.

The possible future:
The game is lackluster for the amount of time it has been out, but that does not mean there are no positives. The games art I find quite charming and unique. The story in the game is great and easy to follow. However, for the average player who has not been with AE for years this will be something that they stop playing after 5 hours or so due to the aforementioned issues above. The updates add new areas, but with the same quest structure that reward players with things that do not change game play in any way.

Some suggestions:
-add a few more skills to the classes (players can unlock one new skill at a time and slowly "master" a certain class)
-make battles in general more complex (players might need to combo skills in a certain way or use a specific skill at the right time)
-add meaningful rewards that showcase a players skill or dedication (like a cape for reaching the highest level in fishing) or maybe reward players with a fishing rod that can catch more fish or unique fish that craft into endgame weapons.
-incentivize old players to revisit old areas so they are not barren when new players start to progress through the game
-Maybe focus less on cosmetics and more on changing and add features in the game based on in game surveys

Many of my friends laugh at me for still playing this game, but I laugh back because I know AE never drops or gives up on their games. This game can improve, I simply feel as if it may take too long before its too late :(
