So... I preordered the damn thing. Haven't done that for a game in years, and I'm not the person to normally do it, but I figured Just Cause... what could go wrong?

Turns out: a lot. (according the the reviews so far)

Obviously I haven't put the hours into it yet needed for a really in-depth review but I felt I needed to give my 2 cents about this game already, looking at the enormous amount of negative reviews so far. Many of which seem to adress bad porting and the likes.

And yes, ok:
I can't deny that it's quite a bit less than optimal at the moment. I'm running a 1080 ti and an overclocked i7 7820X at 4.3 Ghz and the water.... it looks like crap compared to JC 3 and even JC 2. Infact (someone help me out if you're getting the same issue) on my rig having screenspace reflections on, (that thing that gives you such amazing waterside reflections of the environment) completely desintegrates as soon as I get close to the water. The entire reflective surface starts weirdly bugging out and flickering once I'm approaching about 20 metres to the waters surface. It still runs fine but it's immensely immersion breaking.

Well I say it runs fine, but on large missions revolving around having allies being processed on the battlefield with you, not just friendly fighters but for example people you have to escort, my game at random times begins stuttering for a solid 5-10 seconds before working again. Once more not a great sign.

The menus. As people have pointed out they are also archaic in their design, to the point where you can't go back from selecting certain things with the button that IS USED TO GO BACK IN THE GAME. (try pressing escape or control to exit assigning a button hotkey. it won't let you.)

All of that and more being said though?

I'm still going to recommend it. Past all the sub-par textures, horrid anti-aliasing at distance and some clunky menu choices and all the other launch bugs. I recommend it.

The team tried to innovate and go for a new approach and I can respect that. The new grapple mechanics are really fun, the way they integrated multiple secondary fire options is a god send and I do genuinely feel the vehicles control a lot better now, save maybe the actual camera controls. Gunplay feels smoother and a lot better in general imho and just the love to detail they seem to have put in inventing new ways to make the destructible environment creative, even more so in a way that synergises INCREDIBLY well with all the new grapple mechanics and features.

And while the cutscenes actually do look like a PS2 game, the visual improvements for atmospheric lighting, proper night darkness that I have been begging people to do this way for years, and the imo much better vertical map design of this specific title compared to JC 3....

If you like Just Cause 3 and/or 2. I reckon you're going to have a BLAST with this game one way or the other. The new engine and... yes even the new physics based bugs that come with it, if anything only IMPROVE the comedic value and replayability as long as you aren't hoping for a carbon copy of those 2 previous games.

Coster out.

Early Access Review
There are not many games that I am willing to buy for full price, especially if the one in question seems to avoid going on sale harder than the plague.

But this early access game did it. And my god it's fun. The game draws you in with initially simple constructions, and before you know it, you've spent the last 5 hours optimising your coal production.

Good game.

Standing on a plane in full flight while shooting at a helicopter with your rocket launcher... I love this game.
