Sea of Thieves is a multiplayer sandbox with the distinction of being a very strong story generator. Every time you set sail is a new adventure with new experiences, with player interaction being the icing on the cake that keeps things fresh. If you like pirates, play this game. If you like sandbox game-play with PvP elements, play this game. If you don't want to fight other players then don't, it's possible but not nearly as fun.

To talk about the PvP for a second, this is about as fair as you can get in this style of game. With the biggest ship in the game, the galleon, being capped at four players the odds may be against you but not as impossible as being jumped by five times that number in other games. With alliances being fragile and very difficult to organize outside of the game, you will rarely have to fight crews above the crew cap. Also, with every player having access to practically all of the tools as everyone else, a player can just hop in and play without having to worry about grinding a coat that gives you 5% more health or anything like that. The closest thing to that in this game are captained ships and Dark Adventurer sails, which have a v shape that help with visibility, but the benefits they bring are more QoL than an advantage over other players.

Overall, great game.

EDIT: Got a lot more time at the game, I am not over 500 hours in compared to ~160 when I initially wrote this. Managed to get BOTH PvP curses from the game's hourglass mode and got a 10 win streak as well.

Gotta say, the game does have some issues, some on a technical level and others on a design level.

First, the technical. The game has hackers. They can teleport explosive kegs on to your ship, have aim bot, all the bells and whistles. They do get banned consistently, but due to a loophole with linking steam and Microsoft accounts they can get a new one up and running in no time. Thankfully, they mostly keep to hourglass, but it is still inexcusable. "Hit reg" is also very annoying, where the game will give you a hit marker when you fire a gun but the bullet does not do any damage. This is particularly noticeable when you are firing at explosive kegs in a crows nest from below.

On a design level, it does not particularly cater to more dedicated players who stick with the game for a long period of time. As an example, awhile back they removed the ability to board ships from the harpoons and map table if the ship was close enough to the water. This was very situational but gave players with that awareness the ability to board from an unexpected avenue. This helped in stalemate situations where the other ship was watching ladders constantly instead of you. But now, combat has less depth than before. Speaking of combat, little has been done to add depth to it for a long time and has grown stagnant for me. Which is a shame, since I do think that it has a strong foundation.

So after complaining about it for two whole paragraphs, why do I still recommend it? Socially, still a fantastic way to make new friends. I even managed to found an entirely new friend group around the game. So if you're someone like a jaded MMO player who missed the days when games were more social, this game might be worth a shot. Also, it still is a great game to play casually or at an intermediate level, though if you push past that, the cracks start becoming more visible.

TL;DR Lots of fun for awhile but then fades away. But, the real fun will be the friends you make along the way.

Destroy your enemies with swords, spells, corpses of your enemies, and more! See them driven before you as you dismember those foolish enough to stand against your god-like might and revel in the slaughter!

Overall pretty chill game.
