I want to begin by saying that I really enjoy the "Dragon's Dogma" part of Dragon's Dogma: Dark Arisen.

The story is.. okay, whatever; you're the chosen one. It's super cliché, but it works.

The combat system overall is very solid. It's similar to monster hunter, and feels like a real action RPG. Melee feels just how you want, ranged rewards the marksman, and magic.. Magic is amazing. Each spell is unique (even the upgraded versions of spells are not just stronger; they have an added effect most of the time), has a hilarious name, and is useful in its own way (unless the spell is just plain useless, and there are a couple of those). The basic "fireball" spell you get at the beginning of the game? Still useful throughout your mage/sorcerer playthrough. Super strong endgame fire spell? Not your "bread and butter" at all. You will cast the "super strong endgame" magic rarely because, while powerful, it takes eternity to charge up, and you don't always have time for that.

A lot of the boss/mini-boss enemies are unique, have a great feel, and require a different approach. You need to target weak spots, employ magical weaknesses, or both for maximum effectiveness. Cyclops and Chimeras are totally different and need to be handled differently (though climb and bash works reasonably well against both if you're melee). Golems are a really well designed enemy that require a super specific strategy and cannot be harmed by magic.. at all.

Despite the huge, mostly empty world that you will run around a lot (though there are often little encampments strewn about) and the typical chosen one story, the game is solid and delivers an enjoyable RPG experience from start to finish.

..and then there's the "Dark Arisen" part of Dragon's Dogma: Dark Arisen.

While the areas in Dragon's Dogma might not be particularly amazing, none are reused ever. Dark Arisen is the same 4 (?) places over and over. The same dark, drab dungeon with a bunch of blood and bodies everywhere; I feel like I'm playing ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ Diablo or something (not a good thing). You can only do dark, hellish dungeon a couple times before I am absolutely sick of it, and Dark Arisen is nothing but. There's also a WONDERFUL mechanic where if you kill "too many" enemies in the same part of the dungeon, a boss will spawn.

The enemies in Dragon's Dogma are defeatable or avoidable; you cannot avoid several enemies in Dark Arisen. The areas are usually fairly small and force you into combat with either ridiculously powerful (I'm talking same fight-length as the final boss in Dragon's Dogma - which takes like 10 minutes or more), extremely annoying, or both.

Let me take a little bit to explain "extremely annoying." There's a vertical room with broken stairs you climb by bridges going across the middle of the tower. You know what's the best kind of enemy to randomly spawn here? A dragon. Yep, a dragon. Something that flies and crashes to the ground if you hit hard enough. That means you will constantly be running up and down the room even if you're a mage (can't shoot straight up) only to then be forced all the way back down when it falls.. just in time for it to take off into the air again. That wasn't enough for ya? How about an enemy that is literally immune to damage unless you attack its weak spot which is almost never vulnerable while it debuffs you with blindness (your entire screen is a black fog, and you cannot see anything except yourself) and slowness (effects walking, attacking, casting, and jumping). This enemy is unavoidable and in another vertical room where you are required to be on the ground level to take advantage of its "big opening" attack just for it to then spew poison fog through the lower chamber meaning you must go back up the stairs. This fight easily took longer than the final boss of Dragon's Dogma and was mostly me running up and down the stairs just to get like 5 seconds of attacking its weak spot for a bit of damage.

If the above paragraph was not enough for you, how about enemies that kill you in one hit from full health while you're wearing highly protective armor that slows you down considerably? Giant dudes that have attacks that take up the entire tiny room they REFUSE TO LEAVE where they stay? Literally instant kill moves that you must avoid.. while you're stuck in a casting animation you cannot cancel (yes, you can cancel casting but not animations once you finish the cast).

If I haven't thoroughly convinced you that Dark Arisen is at the very least frustrating, the equipment you acquire during the DLC is randomly generated. You can buy strong gear in Dragon's Dogma from the vendor or will be given some periodically (or you'll find some in chests). The gear in Dark Arisen is not useable until you pay an NPC special DLC currency to "purify" for you. Once you've done that it will assign you a piece of equipment based on your vocation (class) and your main pawn's vocation. You wouldn't even KNOW that if you didn't look it up on the wiki first. If you don't like what it gives you, you can kill yourself and retry for a different item.. but only if you also switch vocations. If you want a melee weapon, you will get the same melee weapon over and over and over if you try to cheese it by resetting. Best part of all this? The "cursed" weapons and armor are uncommon and require you to either go extremely far in the dungeon (there are a couple of shortcuts at least) or kill the randomly spawned extremely powerful/annoying bosses.

Throughout Dark Arisen I felt like I was playing a worse (yes, worse!) version of Vindictus which is a free-to-play grindy Korean MMORPG. Vindictus literally repeats places and enemies for dungeons (sometimes with a color change or done in reverse). Most weapons or armor require you to grind a ton and aren't even big upgrades unless you upgrade them a ton which require even more grinding, real money, or both. Why did I think Dark Arisen was worse than Vindictus? Well, for starters I wasn't expecting a lot considering Vindictus is free-to-play and literally made for you to grind (not that I like it), and the combat in Vindictus is overall better than Dragon's Dogma. Don't get me wrong, Dragon's Dogma combat is good, and has solid variety; but Vindictus has tight, skill rewarding combat (unless you spend real money and buy the healing potions you can use at any time).

Sorry for the rant about Vindictus, but I felt like the comparison was way too close to pass up.

Overall, I really enjoyed Dragon's Dogma, and I'm not sure I'll be playing anymore Dark Arisen.. ever? I've honestly never done the "quit to title screen" option after dying in a video game before today. I always keep going until I'm too tired or finish my goal for the day.

Strongly recommend Dragon's Dogma to any RPG lover out there; I'd say it's a solid 8/10. I can't say I enjoyed anything about Dark Arisen.. none of the enemies were exciting (most were redone versions of Dragon's Dogma enemies with different weaknesses or a couple new moves), the story so far was extremely lame, the environment was bottom of the barrel as I already mentioned, and the loot felt like a free to play phone game simulator.

Edit upon some more playing Dark Arisen in an attempt to prove myself wrong: At least 2 of the boss/mini-boss enemies have attacks with basically zero animation/warning that just straight kill you (Garms turning to the side or Cursed Dragons biting you). I fought the same dragon boss like 5 times and was killed from full health most of those times by a seemingly normal attack.. no warning, no charge up, just CHOMP and you're dead. Someone's probably going to say "oh, you were low level" or something. I was WRECKING this thing in like 2 minutes each attempt just to die right before I killed it; there is no way I was not an appropriate level for this encounter unless I'm supposed to kill it in one cast.

I want to start off with the good things about Shovel Knight:

It's a strong platformer.

The levels are challenging enough without being too rough.

There are a lot of cool mechanics and abilities.

Overall, I was happy playing through Shovel Knight, but I felt like the game was far too short for the price tag. I was barely able to clock in 10 hours on the base game which is abyssmal compared to a lot of the other Indie games I've played on Steam for less! I have over 100 hours on both Terraria and FTL which I got for $5 and $10 respectfully. It's possible that I went in expecting too much, but I would not buy this game not on sale. However, if it is on sale for like 50% off, I think it would be a reasonable game to pick up.

Lastly, *SPOILER ALERT* ♥♥♥♥ PLAGUE KNIGHT'S CAMPAIGN. I have not raged at a video game in a long time, and Plague Knight is so ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ obnoxious. Even the starting levels are downright ridiculous; and while it does get easier as you go along, Plague Knight is infuriating to play. Doing basically any jump can get you killed because of his stupid super jump ability that is required for 90% of jumps. He will soar over or slide off every single ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ platform, and it is not fun at all.

The only advantage this game has over Counter-Strike is that it has a nicer interface.. it has worse gameplay and rampant cheating. The only reason to play this game is if you're cheating or know several people that play and have nothing better to do. You can't play a day without seeing a cheater, and there are pros cheating that do not get punished for it. I'd love to say the time I spent playing this game was great, and some of it was; but most of it was unpleasant beacuse of the bad mechanics (movement is atrocious, hitboxes have been bad since the beta, and visibilty is poor).

This game is an extreme disappointment after playing the RUSHED Dark Souls. There is no excuse for this awful piece of trash Fromsoft has ♥♥♥♥ out. Do not play this game and go play #1 instead.
