I played the original Black Survival on mobile a long time ago. I'm not a fan of competitive games or do I enjoy Battle Royal type games, but I greatly enjoyed it's interesting spin on it. The world, the lore, and the characters gave a purpose for the game type with a strange emphasis to avoid battles early on and focus on crafting and building power before ambushing other unsuspecting people in order to be the last one alive.

Eternal Return: Black Survival takes the same formula and adds in the visuals I desperately wanted back when I played the original mobile game. The models and art style captures the character static art perfectly and the gathering, hiding, crafting, and possibly avoiding or going on a killing spree is all retained and expanded on. Unlike the original game where you went to an area and tapped the screen to search, you actively have to find search places as you run around.

This game is more about planning than it is about murder. Plotting routes to gather the materials you need for powerful gear as quick as possible is the prime objective. As areas start locking out, you'll find your routes and your plans fall apart and you have to scramble for alternatives, or everything can go perfectly and others start having to struggle. There's a lot of mechanics in play, to killing npc animals to improve your combat and hunting skills or simply running around to improve your movement speed with a skill leveling system taken straight from any popular moba, the game is honestly a very intriguing mix of various aspects combined in a way that just feels right.

While this game is still very new, there is a lot to love here. Even by people like me who don't normally enjoy these competitive pvp style games. Gathering, crafting, and hiding is equally relaxing and adrenaline inducing. For a free to play game that isn't demanding your money every screen, there is literally no reason not to give it a shot.

Finally, a good VR game.

This game is a horror game. Katia is cute. Don't murder her too much, ok?

Late review, but I figure I'll finally put up my thoughts about this game.

The graphics are very poor, the engine itself struggles at every possible moment. It literally feels like it will crash and break apart at a moments notice, held together by string and duct tape (Although crashing has not once happened to me, just saying it feels like it will). Animations are passable, the world itself is empty and barren, there is no quest system, no ultimate bad guy to defeat or a end game gold to accomplish. No scripted story to speak of.

So how is it so good? I can not explain it. The way the AI interacts with itself is natural, while you're outside of a city building a small base to survive, the AI is battling wars to the north, bandits are attacking wanderers leaving town, animals and creatures are massacring bands of people in the outskirts and it's not just happening when you see it happen, it's happening every minute. While you are building your cities walls, mining ore, starving to death, there's tons of other NPC AI that are having it worse elsewhere.

The combat system is interesting enough, and the RPG elements are done in a way that is only similar to Oblivion or old school Elder Scrolls games but in a way that is much more... Realistic... I guess is the word. Strength is increased by carrying heavy stuff, makes sense. Dexterity is increased by using ranged weapons, makes sense. Toughness is increased by getting hit and/or losing fights, wait what?! That makes total sense too! Why hasn't this been done before!

This leads me to the last thing I'll mention, actually dying in this game is actually pretty hard to accomplish. NPC's typically don't want to kill you, they want to capture you or take your stuff, to them, killing you solves nothing. Now cannibals will obviously eat your corpse and kill you, most animal/creatures will eat your corpse, other than that though the only way to actually die is to bleed out from very deep/bad wounds and not have the items to stop the bleeding or die of starvation. This is a great thing, makes your playthroughs last awhile, makes losing in combat not be the end of your adventure. Revenge is always an option.

Now let's all look forward to Kenshi 2 and hope it doesn't lose the charm the original has.

One of the best JRPG's ever created.

Port issues aside, this game is the most unique RPG in it's mechanics and the way it behaves. There isn't much, mechanics wise, that makes logical real world or even RPG sense, you have to reteach yourself the how and why things are like they are just for this game in order to even wrap your head around how damage and the guns work (Machineguns can't kill), how leveling works (Seperate levels combined together creates character level), how quests work (Side quests are just as important as main quests, they can and will disappear after some progress is made), how turns in battle work (Like chess, you have to set up your movement with the next turn in mind to collect 'resonance').

The story is nearly nonsensical, the first half of the game gives you small glimpses at the overarching story and the world, but it's mostly early episodes of Cowboy Beebop with our little mercenary group taking jobs from rich people in order to make some cash and survive. What shines in the first half of the game are the interactions between the three members of your group, and their reactions to stumbled upon memories or ridiculous tasks. The game is designed in a way that you'll understand each persons motivations almost immediately, but you will become overburdened with questions just as quickly and the game will not answer any of those questions until the second half of the game.

The personalities of everyone is an anime trope of some sort, and a lot of their interactions are very tropy and very anime. So straight off the bat, the more weeb you are the more you'll fall in love with these characters.

This game is much better than it deserves to be, it's Miyazaki and Studio Gibli more so than Miyazaki and Studio Gibli's own game Ni No Kuni. I'm only about half way through the story so far, so my expectations could prove wrong. Story is intriguing in every moment, it's slow, you have to be the kind of person to be sucked in by characters simply interacting with one another. Other than the art style itself, the dialog voice acting and the personalities of all these characters is a huge selling point. It really is incredibly hard to believe if someone is telling the truth or not, the wording is exceptionally subtle.

So far the choices matter in that you get some additionally dialog later regarding it, they could have more impact on the story near the ending maybe, but the most you get from it is your perception of Anne herself and how confrontational or non-confrontational she is. Normally your own outlook at a main character is a straight line regardless of your choices, so I've never really considerded that being a big part in character development until now. Your choices in this game can change your outlook on the main character.

I highly recommend this game. Again, it is far better than it deserves to be and I'm so glad I purchased it. Really looking forward to Square Enix Collectives next release. They have all been oustanding so far.

I bought this game expecting it to be my second game I request a refund for of the year.

I’m having lots of fun with it. All the hate is bandwagoning hate, even the ‘save slot’ fiasco is not a big deal considering the amount of time you spend on one character. I can’t imagine why anyone would want to start over with a new character. The micro transaction stuff, while being in the game, isn’t a big deal either since the game gives you that currency just for logging in each day and the only things you can buy with it are gestures and the aformentioned character slots.

It’s uninformed hate, and while I don’t expect everyone to enjoy it like I have been, I do believe a good 95% of the people bashing it are doing so just because of the Kojima ♥♥♥♥ (I was one of those too)

It’s Metal Gear meets Stephen Kings The Mist. I’m finding it very fun and creative.

It's like Violated Heroine but with more classic RPG elements and less randomness... Oh and it's actually a finished product. Unfortunately though this game does not have a Serena, you are stuck with big boobs or bust. I'm a decent ways into it and still chanting "DFC for life!".
