I'll admit that From Software games are an acquired taste, but they're genuinely great. If you haven't tried the Souls games, or if you have and liked them, this game is definitely worth picking up.

Miyazaki lied. This isn't the size of Limgrave, it's half the size of the base game, densely packed with vivid and beautiful landscapes filled to bursting with all sorts of new enemies primed to turn your insides out. Other devs would have been content to release this by itself for $70.

This game is honestly great. Being expendable never felt so good. The shooting mechanics in this game are tight, responsive, and fun, and the strategem system is amazing. The game has tons of varied enemies and planets, and we even had a surprise invasion from the Sony faction!

Some guy gifted this game to me, said it was terrible and that I should play it to see if my computer can run it, given that someone with a 1080 was having framerate issues. I can indeed confirm that a Core i7 7700k and GTX 1080 Ti can actually run the game.

That being said, I beat all of the game's "missions" in about 30 minutes. Every single one consists of the player spawning in a large, open area with a bunch of bots who can't aim, and then trying to find a chest. As soon as you touch the chest, you get plopped back to the title screen, which I guess counts as winning?

I also managed to get out of bounds in several maps, because someone thought that leaving big gaping holes in the world was a good idea. However, the most egregious crime this game has committed is trying to pass itself off as even being worth 50 cents.

This is a game comprised of free Unreal assets, in which the developer followed a tutorial on how to make an Unreal game, failed horribly, and then published whatever was left. Seriously, more effort went into this review than actually went into the game. Why am I even writing this?

Oh, and also you can't move the camera if you aren't holding one of the mouse buttons, the cursor is completely visible at all times, and if you have multiple monitors, the cursor does not lock to the one the game is on, meaning you can accidentally click off of the game.

Everyone, meet the new Bad Rats, or if Tero Lunkka gets angry and starts censoring people, The Slaughtering Grounds.

Dark Souls is an excellent game with challenging, yet rewarding gameplay, and excellent level and enemy design. The combat is tight and responsive, and while the game will not hesitate to punish the player for mistimed dodges or incorrectly aimed attacks, it also is quite rewarding and fair. The world is large and intricate, but not so large that it's difficult to make your way around.

However, Dark Souls is not like many modern games, which give you nice objective markers or a huge, flashing arrow to help you find your way. You will have to explore on your own.

In terms of story, Dark Souls is somewhat unique in that you will only be exposed to as much story as you want to be. You can go through the entire game understanding little other than that everything wishes to kill you, or you can dig and begin to uncover the intricate lore of the land. The game also to this day has active cooperative and player-vs-player online play, allowing you to play with or against other players.

It is important to note, however, that the port for Dark Souls: Prepare to Die Edition is not the best. There are several mods aiming to remedy this, including Durante's DSFix, enabling the game to render in full HD and enabling texture replacement, eur0pa's Dark Souls PvP Watchdog, which helps combat cheating and displays some useful statistics for online play, and Wulf2k's Dark Souls Connectivity Mod, which augments the slow and inconsistent Steam matchmaking for the game with DSCM-Net, which also allows for manual connections to your friends, and shows some details about other players in your online pool. Furthermore, the keyboard and mouse controls for the game aren't the best, so it is highly recommended that you play with a controller.

Other than these pitfalls, Dark Souls is an excellent game and I recommend it to anyone looking for a challenge.

Decent and fun campaign (unless playing on Veteran), tons of community content to explore. Might want to give the multiplayer a miss, it's full of cheaters and is exactly what you'd expect from a CoD game.
Actually, just play the zombies.
