This game is a half-baked Hotline Miami meets Max Payne. Outside of some flashy particle effects and some destructible items in the environment, the game isn't particularly nice to look at, its attempting to mimic the sort of unreal engine realism look in the unity engine, and just looks very cheap. The way enemies just snap aimbot kill you as soon as you enter a room or fire a shot also feels very off with this more realistic art-style, i think it worked in hotline miami because they were going for a more old school arcade vibe.
And because, unlike in hotline miami, this is a 2.5D game with more rigid environmental collisions, often you will be shot through an impossible small gap in your cover, or you will try to take cover behind something then your character will mount that thing and then you'll be shot, or you will try shooting someone from ontop of that cover and it will completely miss them because your character can only shoot in a straight line; i had countless restarts because of this, it wasn't fun, it felt very unfair.
Enemy AI, outside of their impossibly accurate aiming, is just annoying or braindead, they just kinda shuffle around back and forth or sometimes run halfway across the map, they are like ants just scattering around, makes it very annoying to get one of the optional challenges to never miss a shot, because they just move around so inhuman and unpredictably. They also have almost no variation, they have different weapons but are functionally the same because you deal with them the same way, some enemies dodge but again you just deal with them the same way; later on there's enemies with body armor that you have to hit twice, but again you just deal with them the same way, there's no change in gameplay on your end.
There's 4 weapons in the game, yes, 4. They all behave pretty similarly, the shotgun is the flashiest and most different, and while it can be easier to aim, its slow firerate makes it pretty useless, I honestly stuck with the pistols through the whole game because you can unlock infinite ammo for them pretty quickly, at that point there's no real reason to use the other 3 weapons.
Boss fights are a joke, there's 5 of them, they are all the exact same, you just go down a corridor dodging their shots while firing back your own, dealing with a few enemies along the path. Its not nearly as fun or cinematic as i'm sure they envisioned, honestly the worst levels in the game.
Once you get past the cool John Wick 4 visuals, which wears off pretty quick, the game is just filled with these half-baked, un-polished, un-fun design decisions that ruin the experience. Avoid. There's many better options out there, play Hotline Miami 1 and 2, 12 is Better Than 6, Katana Zero, or OTXO instead.

Maybe i'm playing this game wrong, but I really don't get the appeal, at least in "early game".

You spawn in, are given very little direction (other than a mission that you can't actually do until at least level 10), but its a survival game, its pretty self-explanatory. My main gripe is that all progression is funneled into the "tech tree", you get 3 points to spend in whenever you level up, and its (basically) the only way for you to learn to recipes and progress. But that is so slow and boring, You spend 3 points, craft the new stuff, then have to level up again before you can do anything. This is fine for the first few levels as you level up pretty fast, but then you get into this loop where you have nothing to do in-between level ups so you just ♥♥♥♥ around farming for materials you don't actually need just to get XP so you can do it all over again.

And outside of that, it seems like a pretty generic open world survival game, I'd liken it to a PVE RUST, a similar feel and vibe. The sort of nasapunk sci-fi hook falls away almost immediately when you're stabbing deer with spears and building log cabins, so there's not much unique aesthetically about the game. Again nothing particularly bad, but also nothing unique, very generic.

Maybe there's something I'm missing, and i'll bet later on when the game starts to open up your options (creature taming, farming, missions, etc) there would be more to latch onto, but to get to that point, to slog through a very obtuse progression system in a very generic feeling survival game, it just doesn't feel worth your time.

A cautious recommendation, I think it is just short enough to not get repetitive and just long enough to justify buying it (on sale). A kinda goofy survival horror boomer shooter with a unique aesthetic and movement / gun physics that are satisfying enough to get you through the short campaign. Pretty small amount of guns and enemy types, levels design isn't great, and the bosses are pretty bad, but again I think it is still a fun couple hours spent.

I'm a sucker for Sci-Fi horror, and was initially excited to play this game, and found the opening presentation very compelling and intriguing, but by then after a few hours, you realize you're already nearing the end of a very shallow, disappointing walking sim. Not to discredit whats good about the game, amazing performances, great graphic and sound design, some interesting (if again, shallow) world design and lore. But again, you kinda visit like 4 locations, don't really do anything, then the game is over. More of a tech demo than an actual game. If you want a quick linear sci-fi experience and can pick it up for really cheap than go for it, but otherwise avoid.

The worst Dread X collection since the first, really disappointing. Only maybe 3 or 4 of these demos had any potential, "Interim" was downright embarrassing, and even the hub world was more poorly designed than previous collections. Only pick this up if you're getting the bundle or are a big DreadXP fan.

Very odd game, a 2D adventure game souls-like. Honestly not a great combination, and actual gameplay is pretty half-baked and unfun to play; but its visually very interesting and clearly has had a ton of work and love poured into it, Its just so odd and out-there that I believe its worth experiencing for its artistic value alone, I've never played anything like it.
