there is a world between breaths that games like toleo live in. a kind of stillness where one has to achieve a void of mind near death or something like it.

i had to leave my body behind and simply become a series of inputs.

it was glorious to kiss that light for fleeting seconds at a time.

We had something really fun and unique when Wintermute dropped. I remember finishing the early versions and being really satisfied (especially encountering the bear) with it and waiting for what came ahead.

A few years went by, maybe I changed with what I want but, what the ♥♥♥♥ did I come back to?

Now I'm finding myself being bounced from waypoint to waypoint to simply wait for a timer to go off only to go back and listen to David Hayter ham it up a bit. The bear went from this intense ominous setpiece encounter to just another typical video game boss that you get railroaded into fighting to do a combat quick time event 3 times to kil.

My desire to keep playing my newest run absolutely died with that bear, especially with the devs cramming in a I GUESS THIS ENVIRONMENT MADE YOU A MONSTER TOO HUH commentary which really feels like a go ♥♥♥♥ yourself from the people who forced you into the situation in the first place. The entire narrative experience feels so much more bloated now and spelled out now and I just dont ♥♥♥♥♥♥ care!

If youre hankering for a cold flavored survival game you'll find that fun loop here but like every single other game in this genre, the fun in that loop is entirely ephemeral and when it's gone it's gone.

We had a really tight , quick moving mystery that we felt apart of. Now its just another in a sea of tepid AAA style mass market timewastery.

The pace this pushes is a glorious train of violence.

A great co-op shooter made with a Soul's like intent, not just a straight copy. The gunplay is very satisfying, the weapon mod system (while not revolutionary) adds a lot of depth to how you can approach encounters. I for one am a big fan of crowd control and am finding so many options that make each playthrough rather fresh. This is bolstered by great level design built on partially randomized layout. I'm 40 hours in and only scratching the surface.

I really hope this game succeeds, we could be witnessing the birth of a new big franchise.

I am utter garbage at this game, I die so very quickly and just about every play session has ended with me ragequitting amidst a sea of swears.

Yet I keep playing this game. This game constantly mocks me with so many variety of cheap deaths. But I keep coming back to that brutal buffet.

What is it?

I think a lot of it has to do with it being so simple and easy to pick up and play. It's controls are very tight and responsive and like any good rogue-like the core logic is understanding the relationship between risk and reward.

This is very much old-skool cruel.

Few titles out there can generate the type of tension and thrill that a great run of BOI can. Every hit, power up, pill, card every move is crucial to determining just how far you might get.

For me the real joy in this game is learning the balance between risk and reward. You've got a great run going so far, dare you risk it by taking this unknown pill? Should you use your last key on this floor or save it for the next?

More often than not you wind up getting shafted but when that gamble pays off its hard not feeling deeply satisfied.

It's a deliciously cruel game.
