- We see a pattern of similarity between different objects that we encounter in real life
- We try to characterize the fundamental aspects of the objects behavior, we create an abstraction that meets the fundamental behavior
- We apply our abstraction to new but similar objects when we encounter them.

Now if your species spends several thousand years concentrating it’s finest minds on creating these abstractions, you end up with quite a few of them. It turns out that they are also extremely useful, even necessary, for the advancement of technology, which is how we can create actual objects that you can see and touch :)

It sure would be nice if could create a way to think about these different objects in the same, by distilling the characteristics that they have in common into some useful abstraction, which we can call numbers. Now when we see something new that behaves similarly to our current “numbered” objects, we already a lot about it based off of our previous observations.

While numbers are in a sense the simplest mathematical abstraction, all of the others, such as sets, groups, lines, vectors, etc, can be thought of in the same way.

A couple other answers have already pointed out that numbers, sets, groups, and points are abstractions rather than actual objects, but I think it is worth discussing this further.

Why do we have these abstractions? What purpose do they serve if they don’t actually exist? Shouldn’t we care about things we can actually touch and see?

Human beings are really good at noticing patterns in the world around us. We notice that keeping track of how many apples we have in our pantry is strikingly similar to keeping track of how many days or years have passed since we were born, or how many traffic lights we stopped at on our way to work.
