FAQ
What does this mean?
The amount of karma (points) on your comment and Reddit account has decreased by one.
Why did you do this?
There are several reasons I may deem a comment to be unworthy of positive or neutral karma.
I don't believe my comment deserved a downvote. Can you un-downvote it?
Sure, mistakes happen. But only in exceedingly rare circumstances will I undo a downvote. If you would like to issue an appeal, shoot me a private message explaining what I got wrong. I tend to respond to Reddit PMs within several minutes. Do note, however, that over 99.9% of downvote appeals are rejected, and yours is likely no exception.
How can I prevent this from happening in the future?
Accept the downvote and move on. But learn from this mistake: your behavior will not be tolerated on Reddit.com . I will continue to issue downvotes until you improve your conduct. Remember: Reddit is privilege, not a right.
Edit: Wow I really didnt think this would blow up like this. Thanks everyone!
Edit 2: I think the Feds are onto me.
Examples of archipelagos include: the Indonesian Archipelago, the Andaman and Nicobar Islands, the Lakshadweep Islands, the Galápagos Islands, the Japanese archipelago, the Philippine Archipelago, the Maldives, the Balearic Islands, the Åland Islands, The Bahamas, the Aegean Islands, the Hawaiian Islands, the Canary Islands, Malta, the Azores, the Canadian Arctic Archipelago, the British Isles, the islands of the Archipelago Sea, and Shetland. Archipelagos are sometimes defined by political boundaries. For example, while they are geopolitically divided, the San Juan Islands and Gulf Islands geologically form part of a larger Gulf Archipelago.
- We try to characterize the fundamental aspects of the objects behavior, we create an abstraction that meets the fundamental behavior
- We apply our abstraction to new but similar objects when we encounter them.
Now if your species spends several thousand years concentrating it’s finest minds on creating these abstractions, you end up with quite a few of them. It turns out that they are also extremely useful, even necessary, for the advancement of technology, which is how we can create actual objects that you can see and touch :)
While numbers are in a sense the simplest mathematical abstraction, all of the others, such as sets, groups, lines, vectors, etc, can be thought of in the same way.
Why do we have these abstractions? What purpose do they serve if they don’t actually exist? Shouldn’t we care about things we can actually touch and see?
Human beings are really good at noticing patterns in the world around us. We notice that keeping track of how many apples we have in our pantry is strikingly similar to keeping track of how many days or years have passed since we were born, or how many traffic lights we stopped at on our way to work.
Consider the facts:
Americans pay $2.1B to fight fires in parks and forests, almost 90% of which are caused by humans.
Wildlife in our parks are routinely relocated or euthanized due to conflicts with humans. The National Park Service cites human garbage as the origin of many of these unfortunate and unnecessary conflicts.
