Early Access Review
First thing to say is that this is NOT Dead by Daylight. This is more of a direct versus game, cat and mouse sort of thing. The monster role in VHS is very similar to the killer role in DBD: you're hunting down the teens, first hit injures them, second knocks them down. But rather than hooking them to sacrifice to DBD's entity, in VHS getting the hits is the whole point. Knock them down enough times and they die.

Where it REALLY diverges is with the survivors / teens. Their objective is to create makeshift weapons to kill the monster, by using four different classes of weapon to wound the monster and temporarily banish them (it gets explained in more detail in the tutorial). So far I've only played as the monster, and only two or three times, but I quickly got used to the fact that the monster is NOT unstoppable, unlike in DBD (pallets, flashlights, etc, aside). Had a few fun stand-off moments already, where a teen had a weapon and I was trying to coax them into wasting ammo without getting hit myself, with mixed results (had some success, sometimes I'd get too close, or another teen flanked me with a weapon of their own).

There is also an interesting "rift" mechanic, I don't know how often it spawns, but whoever claims it first gets the power. For the monster, it gives you a temporary enhanced sight where you can see the outlines of all the teens (a power that I wasted cos I forgot I wasn't playing DBD, and the teen I was after wounded me XD), for the teens, it seems to be some kind of super weapon that tracks you like a guided missile? I assume it counts as one of the type of wounds that hasn't been inflicted yet, but I don't know, both times I've been hit, I only needed to be wounded one more time and died.

To sum up: it's free, try playing a few rounds on both sides! I'll definitely be looking into getting a supporter DLC on payday, I already love this game and it has SO much potential, so I'm happy to support the devs!

While it is a fairly short game (I finished it in one 3.8 hour session), I would say that it's well worth the money. Even though I got it on sale for a fraction of the cost (something like £0.79), I would absolutely have been satisfied with my purchase had I paid full price!

Gameplay-wise, it's a blend of simple combat and adventure game style puzzles that, in classic adventure game format, rewards experimentation, and I thoroughly enjoyed it. The graphics look a lot better in-game than they do in the trailer, and I quite like the general darkness that pervades the game, and I also very much enjoyed the atmosphere that the music and sound effects brought in.

Story-wise, it's simple, you've fallen into a cavern, you don't know where you are, all you know is that you need to get your human pilot medical attention, no complaints from me on that front! I enjoyed the general mystery surrounding the whole thing, and the ending especially has left me eager for the next in the series!

There's always gonna be bad things though, of course, and in particular the controls were a bit clunky right out of the gate, although I did get used to them quite fast! In addition, barring a boss fight at the end of the game, combat was pretty repetitive, although combat's really not the main focus. It certainly wasn't a deal-breaker for me, although I do feel that the game would have performed equally as well if they'd removed the combat altogether.

To sum up:
Graphics - Good!
Sound - Good!
Story - Good!
Price - Good!
Gameplay - Mixed, but still more good than bad!
Controls - Bad :(
Combat - Bad :(

Recommended? Heck yes!
