Go into this as blind as you can. It'll probably take 5-8 hours but the clues ARE THERE if you look. A very solid mystery wrapped in a truly wonderful visual style and the music gave me chills.

One of the few good things to come from 2017 so far. It's beautiful, it's fun and the story feels so alive.

(And I'll personally never forgive you if you tell Rukey his moustache is cheesy.)

One of the few "Steam Early Access" success stories. It has been added to and improved on so much and it's got a surprisingly wide amount of options to tweak your experience. There's going to be a sequel soon, but this is an incredibly fun game, mashing up deck-building, choose-your-own-adventure and rogue-like dungeon exploration

A short, focused experience that does what is sets out to do and tell a short story of a robot traversing a lush alien landscape. Not too much else to say but it's nice.

Don't get me wrong. I love this in some ways, but I just can't in good faith recommend it.

To gush a little bit about it, it's bright, punchy and it has a very unique combat system. You always have a pistol, which dumps garbage data into your enemies' RAM and when their RAM overloads they "crash". The garbage pistol isn't super effective by itself but you can make it easier by picking up one of the special weapons lying around which don't do any damage but disrupt your enemies view in a number of ways. For example there's a sniper rifle that minimizes their interface to a Windows 98 desktop and they have to reopen their interface to move around again, a shotgun that puts pop-up ads onto your enemies' interface and a bazooka that turns it all into ASCII. All of these make it harder for your enemies to react as you pump garbage data into them.

This is all great but the game does nothing to tell you of any of this. The game really doesn't tell you a lot at all. There's no reload indicator on your special weapon, there's no indication of cooldown on your pistol and with no labels or anything on any of the weapons or no in game explanation about how the combat works or what the weapons do.

Even though it's nice looking and has this fun combat system, there's no real -game- to play with it in. As it's only a multiplayer game, it's as strong as its serverbase, which it does not particularly have. And the game seems only deathmatch, but without a round timer or score limit, or even a scoreboard. There's no progression or ranking or any sort of goal to work towards. This makes it more of a toy than an actual game.

It's stylish and unique but it's all flash and no substance.

It's some puzzles. It's $1. No option to change display monitor but I was done in half an hour so no big deal.

Spends too long in intro putting emphasis on making your character (which is always randomized after you die anyway, which you inevitably will), on stealth mechanics (which the game then throws out the window because they're pretty much useless because enemies will either hear the door open or spot you for no dicernable reason) and on the idea of finding gear and looting (which the game then punishes you for doing on a floor by spawning a ludicrously strong enemy)

A better introduction to the world might have made this a positive but it hit all the wrong notes and I amn't coming back.


Edit: Seeing as the developer took the time to reply to my review, I figured it was fair to give them more time and gave it another run. Didn't bother with character customization, began the dungeon again. Had a better time with stealth, but I still feel that stealth, which involves being patient and careful and considerate of your surroundings is very heavily at odds with a secret timer that releases an impossibly powerful enemy that will see you through stealth. This also didn't matter too much anyway as well beause twice the game spawned enemies that were looking towards the only entrance (once was a door and the other was down a long hallway. The "better" pistol I had was woefully inaccurate and weak still even against the early enemies and melee weapon seems to only hit if the square reticle is on the target, which can be frustrating with the tiny speedy dogs.

I managed to find a mystery flask (which I think is supposed to be the main goal of a dungeon and had been under the impression they gave you only benefits for continuing) and ended up getting Blind Sight. So that reticle I mentioned for combat? Gone. My reward for slogging it out was future dungeons would be harder for this character instead.

I quit at that point and uninstalled for a second time and final time and I stand by my thumbs down.
