TL;DR: Just play Vintage Story with a few mods instead of this game.

Boundless looks great at a glance, but the absurd amounts of grinding and tedium only caters to people who want to grind thousands of hours and act like they aren't wasting their time. This game is the psychological equivalent of running in circles. The positives can't outweigh the overwhelming amount of negative points. It used to be an original and promising game that had its unique charm. Now it's an overpriced 1-way ticket to Grindfest Town. Killed by bad management. Overall score: 2/10.
- is negatives +/- is informational or neutral + is positives
- This game is a dead "MMO" with an all-time peak player count of 1150 (means "dead on arrival")
- The amount of holding M1, M2 and W is enough to give you carpal tunnel syndrome on both hands unless you use macros (or thumb buttons if you own a fancy mouse). Using a controller is probably worse
- "Endgame" (if it even exists) is basically grinding to keep your progress and to continue grinding more efficiently. There is no endgame content like dungeons or boss fights to look forward to
- Unholy amounts of grinding which put any Korean MMO game to utter shame
- The game is in maintenance mode. That basically means active development has stopped for good (devs are working on Baldur's Gate 3 if I remember right)

- The grind isn't rewarding on a psychological level. It feels like you are working on a list of "things to do" that never ends and only grows
- Very lonely experience unless you actively seek people to play with (and even then, you probably won't find more than 10 people in one place unless it's a hunt)
- You basically have to make alts unless you carefully plan ahead and eventually get 3 skill pages on one character
- You can buy a private world. Why is this bad, you may ask? It's because you have to keep paying to keep it. You have no chance to play offline or privately as well unless you rent a world
- Dealing with enemies is more of a nuisance (at any given time) than a challenge, even when you are hunting them

- Half of the enemies have ranged attacks and some of them either home or track your movement to such a degree that you pretty much get hit no matter what
- Devs actually doubled down on their "No cash shop" promises and added microtransactions that can directly affect the game (buying plots of land may not be directly P2W, but that's like saying BDO's bag space isn't P2W)
- Game's pacing is butchered by the unnecessarily long crafting times from the VERY START of the game (imagine waiting 30 seconds for some lame early game item which will get discarded the moment you get a replacement)
- Hunting, crafting and mining is tedium itself. That means: Literally everything you can do in this game is tedious
- High price tag for what it "offers"

- There are no NPCs apart from enemies. That means the only things you can interact with is other players, blocks/machines or enemies. There are no quests or solid objectives (as in a main objective/quest line) either
- There is nothing interesting to find when exploring a planet. Exploring isn't exciting in any way. There are no abandoned structures or special enemies to find
- Planets with harmful atmospheres practically remove your ability to see. It's to such an extent that you can't just go through portals in hubs, even if they are within arm's reach.
- Any character customization is thrown out of the window unless you build small, pay money or grind for several weeks to save up ingame currency
- Literally nothing is permanent. Yes, nothing. Gear can't be repaired, so they have to be constantly crafted. Endgame planets can arbitrarily spawn and despawn. Almost nothing is consistently permanent. How does one make a voxel game where most aspects are consumable?

- Cubits and plots are not shared in one account. This means that you have to micromanage plots by switching characters if your build has plots from multiple different characters
- Game loop consists of getting materials and using the said materials to get better materials (either repeat ad infinitum or use the said materials to build something hideous/flashy)
- No clear roadmap or developer communication. Transparency when it comes to plans or current progress is nil
- Only 5 types of mobs
- You can only have 1 food and 1 brew buff

+/- Every block has its own HP that is increased or decreased for different tiered planets
+/- The microtransactions aren't exactly P2W because paying won't make up for the time you lose playing this game

+ Absolutely gorgeous graphics for a game of this genre (blocks are pretty as well)
+ Crafting menus are better than Minecraft's grid system
+ Building is fun (given that you grinded to get the pretty blocks)
+ Item storage system is actually really intuitive
+ General feeling and atmosphere is actually pretty calm (as long as you are on a peaceful planet, of course)
+ Devs' "different planets are on different servers" idea is actually pretty original
+ Crossplay with PS4 is a thing
+ Performance-wise, it runs really well
+ Music is actually pretty soothing and nice
+ Meteors are an original idea. Basically, there are random spawns of meteors that drop rare stuff after you beat the enemies they spawn. The more people are in one area, the stronger and more rewarding they become (makes group hunts a better choice than just wandering alone)
+ Tiny game size

Other notes:

Some links for the curious:
https://shop.playboundless.com/ (their world shop, mind that it's basically rental)
https://steamcharts.com/app/324510 (SteamDB link showing their player count on Steam)

Alternatives:
Vintage Story (what Minecraft would have been if they cared about it)
Terraria (should scratch the "achieve godhood over time" itch)
Kenshi (brutal sandbox game that doesn't care about the player)
Factorio (if you are going to waste time, might as well do it right)
No Man's Sky (it got much better since they keep updating it regularly)

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Before anyone points at my playtime, yes. I still don't recommend it and no, I don't hate this game. I think it has many well-done aspects, but the plethora of negatives far outweigh what little quality content there is. In case you wonder, no. It's not fun 80% of the time. Watching paint dry is more fun than this game. I'm not even joking.

Not even going free to play would save this game if you ask me. I think it's because their budget for marketing was practically nil. Unfulfilled promises and devs practically killing the game are also reasons why it won't be any good even as F2P.

I never felt I was getting more efficient when doing something in this game. All I felt was that I was getting less inefficient, and I was never content about my current progress at any given time for some reason. It's so astonishingly unfulfilling that I think they took design choices straight from Black Desert Online.

This is one of those games where you pour your time and soul into it to get practically nothing in return. I really only returned to it, so I can finally write a more detailed review about why I don't recommend it. I hope my suffering can deter other people from doing the same mistake I did, which is playing this game for too long.

Their "DLC"s can be considered borderline P2W because you can obtain some crafting recipes that can't be obtained otherwise. The iron/gold fist blueprint you can get from the packs can make a big difference in combat. "Oh, but Mr. September, you can just buy the crafted fists from people who paid for the packs instead!" Yeah, exactly. That doesn't make it less egregious, though. Someone has to pay, either in real cash or in hard-earned ingame coins. You can't justify locking recipes to DLC. Exclusivity of this nature in a game like this is practically P2W.
