Fps chess has the potential to be something great and I think that this game will eventually live up to its potential if Meta fork keeps updating the game and listens to the community. This is one of the most innovative fps games I have seen in a while and allows for a lot of things you might not see in some other fps titles.
For one, I really love the options for playing with friends. I love that I can just join a call and play online with my friends, and while the game might be a little scuffed it did better than I expected hardly lagging at all. I also love the fact that I can just have somebody over, connect a controller, and play split screen (albeit I wish you could choose between whether the screens were horizontal or vertical). It gives nostalgia of when I was a kid and played games like halo or cod with friends who were over.
I hope that later down the line of development they add more maps to the game or let the community customly design maps (maybe even making a custom editor for the game). The main map of the game, while fun, might get a little stale after playing it over and over again and I hope new maps are in development.
While I don’t have a lot of hours on I can say I have encountered a few bugs, but not totally unexpected. This isn’t a AAA game and going in I expected a few bugs, but overall, the shooting is pretty fluid and hit registration is pretty decent(although I will say I don’t like how fast people regenerate health). I did crash a couple of times and the frames were really low at one point(which you can fix by turning shadows to low), but the game felt pretty smooth.
I feel like some classes or pieces are too overpowered for what they are supposed to be. I get that this isn’t going to be like chess where even in the description of the game “all your intricate strategies will crumble before the enemy rook's sniper trick-shot”, but I feel like if the enemy has 8 pawns, why should they be able to kill me so easily? This honestly could just be because I'm bad at fps games, but the pawn feels overpowered when compared to pieces like the bishop, whose shotgun feels very underpowered even when up close to enemies, or the king whose sword feels very short and can easily be taken out by a rook standing on the top of a book shelf. All in all, I think some balancing needs to be done, but It’s still fun either way.
After everything I would definitely recommend this game especially because it’s 1. Fun and 2. Free. This game does need to be fixed in some areas, but I think given the time, this could be one of my favorite silly competitive games of 2022 forward.
