Great game! Really liked the mechanics! I thought that this game would be a cakewalk just looking at the mechanics from the trailers, but there was genuine challenge to the later levels and the nightmare mode. It forces you to play smart, consider how to balance movement, angles, and more.

I think each playable character provides some unique abilities and while I think there are some that are better than others, each character shines in its own way. The most interesting thing is the combination of characters abilities. Some characters, like the 3rd character (Ms. Kowalski), can go well with any team composition due to her ability to grant others actions, but other characters, like the 1st character Fran is pretty mediocre, unless paired with another unit like Ms. Kowalski where then she becomes a beast, with her ability to go again after a kill.

The story is good, too. Desta is not a perfect character, but their struggles with their damaged relationships are really interesting. I never at one point thought about any character in this game that the relationship wasn't worth repairing. I think stories with abusive family tropes tend to play the abusers as unreedemable, and then try to redeem them, which doesn't work, but this game doesn't fall into that trap which I greatly appreciate. I was nervous when I heard about the 5th unlock-able character (Lee), but after playing it, I think they handled him fairly well while capturing Desta's concerns (even if it was just part of her dream :3).

My one criticism of the game is the way it toes the line between wanting to be a rogue-like versus a longer singular experience. Asking the player to start over from the beginning and gain 1 health and a potentially useless, potentially useful ability, or to continue their progress tells its players two conflicts ludo-narratives. I'm glad the player, for example, doesn't have to go through chapters 1-6 to get back to 7 if they don't wish to, but I feel like that option should be tied into a setting decided before the start of the run or something.... regardless, minor gripe, but genuinely still a good compromise from an implementation standpoint.

I would love to see a gamemode where you can play as the whole cast on a larger battlefield, but that's just a fun idea haha.

Anyway, really solid game, and I have recommended this game to my friends.
