If for whatever reason you decided to mix Bioshock, Path of Exile, Dead Space, and Dark Souls into a first-person dungeon crawler, this is pretty much about what you might get. The story's fairly interesting, it's alright. The gameplay is decent. Though, when they say they were going for "Oldschool" or "Classic" dungeon-crawler, that really is what you should expect. The puzzles definitely require a bit more thought, frustration, and planning than most games (Especially and particularly if you are trying to hunt down the secrets). The voice-acting is passable, and just manages to escape borderline cheesy, though not by much in my opinion. The combat is turn-based and stat-based, but also can require a bit of long-term preparation. Overall, if you're inexperienced with the genre, don't expect to finish it in an afternoon. In conclusion, I think it's a good game for what it is.

Original Review(Recommended): A new early access game with a bright future ahead of it. I am glad to get to be a part of this game's development. They finished ARK, and will finish this game as well. Not sure where all of these salt-miners came from, don't listen to them.

Edit 5/16/2021(Recommended): It's still got a very, very long ways to go. The community is generally disagreeable in my opinion, likely in large part because those who actually actively play it are understandably frustrated by the game's development progress: or rather significant lack thereof. It's incredibly slow, and there is considerable disagreement as to where it should actually be going, and PVE content is undoubtedly neglected. Keep in mind if you're thinking about buying this that the game has essentially morphed into a PVP-focused war on the seas between whichever tribes have the most people who can play the most amount of time. It sort of has the Rust problem, but exaggerated, since it's more of an MMO with official servers being the primary focus. I have yet to try community servers on this game though, however, they might offer different experiences and be decent- I don't know. In any case, if you're hoping to make it anywhere of note in this game with a group of friends- or god forbid as a solo player- don't bother at the moment. In it's current state, the game is heavily dominated- economically, landwise, and militarily- by Chinese-only mega-factions which play for the most amount of time and have the most active members, putting them on top. It's just the way it sort of is for the most part at the time being. I think this game still has a chance, but I recommend giving it time to cook further, have more updates and content, hopefully more balancing- for PVE/RP too- and a whole lot more fixes. After which, when the update cycle settles and the game has a more cohesive and less turbulent state, modded community servers might become a very interesting and viable environment to explore in the game.

Edit 8/2/2021(Not Recommended):
Updates have become incredibly slow- more sparse than before- with severely limited content, and what changes and additions are made are highly odd and questionable- things which seemingly nobody asked for, and which don't improve the game. None of the game's major, glaring, fundamental problems which have been present since launch- or that have been introduced since- have been fixed to any real degree. Currently, I would not recommend purchasing the game in its current state with its uncertain future. I am not as hopeful for this game's development as I was, only disappointed.

This new "update" that was apparently worth waiting more than a day for is the worst thing to ever scorch my eyes. I can't even look at this game anymore, which kinda inherently makes playing it a difficulty. This was my favorite digital mtg clone, over hearthstone, artifact, gwent, etc., but god, everything looks completely atrocious now, this whole "update" was just a bad reskin... That is only the surface. It is riddled with all sorts of technical problems like bugs and glitches, lag and logins... I can understand the login problems on the mobile version maybe, but going through steam? What the hell happened? The graphics look like these sparkypants idiots barfed rainbows all over everything. Seriously, bring back Direwolf, those guys knew what they were doing. I absolutely loved this game. This is really depressing...

Edit 2020: Well, I suppose I can say that things have certainly changed since this was posted. I overreacted a little, I guess I was very passionate about it at the time. The game and developer situation really sorted itself out in the end. The game's in a great clean and polished state, and I still recommend it now, it's one of my favorites and has been for a while. Sadly and most regrettably, the game is also in its final state. It stopped receiving support and expansions a while ago. It really is a good game. It has the Clockwork City in it. I bought the deal way back when and have the limited time Clockwork City cardback. Idk, it's neat. I'm just glad the server's are still up, and the matchmaking still has people for you to play against. I will be immeasurably saddened the day the servers for this game inevitably shut down for good. I still enjoy this game despite being into MTG and having a cool Kaladesh and Izzet themed deck both IRL and in Tabletop Simulator.

This game and its inhabitants(Yes, people live in it) is an active detriment to my mental and emotional health and wellbeing. It's also strangely addictive. If you want a game that you can truly sink hours of your life into for little to no return, and just to see it blown up in a few minutes, this is it. Rust is a game for masochists. It's also home to one of the (generalized) worst communities I've ever seen in a game, even to this day, but I don't think that's any new information. The game fundamentally can't decide whether it wants to be a bunch of people in a village telling life stories around a campfire while I play an Interstellar midi on a guitar, or a clan of unemployed racists with infinite resources nuking and foundation-wiping everyone on the server and roofcamping nakeds in order to bolster their rock collections; and it hasn't known since it was rebuilt from scratch all those years ago. I got the game way back in Legacy. It's not so much a game, as it is a tool for people to power-trip in a vain attempt to fill the void in their soul created by their crumbling life, and in order to convince themselves that they are, at least, on top of something. Apparently though, "Rust is free", "Rust is savage", "Rust is about losing things", and "Rust is hardcore", and I just don't get the game. Who the ♥♥♥♥ wants to play a game that's about losing things, and that hasn't heard of save forward-compatibility and forces every server to wipe every month whether they like or not? The game is caught between two extremes, and one side is increasingly dissatisfied with all of the "RP-oriented" additions like music, electricity, and safezones, and perceive the game as not being tough enough anymore for the salty spittoon. The other side plays 10,000x pve instant gratification "there is no game"  super weenie hut junior's. My advice, if you're going to play this thing, try to find a community or modded server that meets a happy medium, and that actually has a decent small community that are generally friends with eachother, or at least semi-chill. The only real winners in Rust are the people who managed to figure out how to figure out how to make money off of the infinite salt and sweat. If you want a simple summary, I think the base vanilla game is just too grindy, repetitive, and formulaic for my tastes, and I don't see the point in trying to invest mountains of time that I don't have into inevitably losing all of it. I will say though, that it is a very interesting place to pass through, you meet all sorts of people and really do find some rather unique experiences that you might not find anywhere else. Finally, some details. The game has a really neat, fairly in-depth electrical system, a crop farming and genetics system, fun vehicles, rideable horses with different equipment and stats, vehicular bosses (patrol heli, bradley), a decent building system, fun-to-shoot weapons, and much more. Also, almost everything in the game has a really neat scrap-punk makeshift aesthetic, the atmosphere is amazing, and it has a pretty good soundtrack; but nobody talks about the art-style: they're too busy rocket-raiding wood 2x2s next to the spawn beach because they can, and throwing massive tantrums in the server's discord because they got banned for saying the n word. Ultimately, Rust has the perfect name to reflect both its numerous varied stages of development, and its current state, both with regards to the game itself, and the community. The only constant is change. The true challenge that I see in Rust is scraping away the dull decay, to find the hidden bits that still shine here and there beneath. I see the game not as a cycle, but as an adventure, going into a chaotic, hostile, and unpredictable unknown, as I travel from place to place, server to server, seeing the sights and meeting the people. I reserve the freedom to keep moving onward, in hopes, perhaps, of reaching some unknown destination, or finding... something... in the game. I always come back chasing some kind of strange nostalgia for the game that almost could've been instead.
