Top-down, co-op (local and online), rogue-lite. Fun weapons/skills. Interesting upgrades. Great time overall.

Solid arena shooter. Fast combat and plays more like Halo than a Call of Duty title. Well worth the time investment.

This is my first Monster Hunter game. As such, I wasn't sure what to expect.

Gameplay wise, I absolutely love the game. You go out hunting for giant monsters to upgrade items, progress the story-line, help your friends, and sometimes just for the fun of it. The combat feels really satisfying as you upgrade your items and own personal skill in the game it is neat to see how monsters which were difficult at first now easily fall before your feet. The best I can come up with for comparison would be Shadow of the Colossus/Dark Souls style monster fights where you are controlling a character with a move-set somewhere between Dark Souls and a fighting game. Less dodging/avoiding and faster combat than the Dark Souls series, but Monster Hunter World (MHW) can still be punishing if you are not watching what is going on during the boss fight. MHW is basically a boss fight game at its core.

The weapons in MHW serve essentially as the game's system of player classes. Each of the 14 styles of weapons has its own combat move set and feel. There are ranged weapons, fast moving weapons, slow but hard hitting weapons, etc. You can switch between weapons at any time, with no penalty, and keep the same armor/consumables you've had throughout the game. As such, trying all of the weapons is easy if you want to, but I find sticking to, and mastering, one weapon to be the most satisfying so far.

The item progression/crafting system is very satisfying as well. You will be crafting and upgrading weapons and armor throughout the game. Each of the weapons has a crafting tree with TONS of versions of a weapon with different stats. Armor crafting lets you mix and match armor to improve stats and provide buffs. The same craft-able armor sets generally can be used with any weapon (whether from one of the 14 "classes" or from a single weapon's upgrade tree), but end game there are some min/maxing you will probably want to do by selecting a specific armor set with a specific weapon. Nothing as drastic as armor differences in say Diablo (where armor can give class specific ability), but for example one armor set may do more fire elemental damage and one set does more raw damage. The only restrictions to what you can build in the crafting area are: where you are in the storyline, what monster species you have fought, and if you have the appropriate mats from killing said monsters.

Overall the game itself is fantastic to me. close to a 10/10. The interface is another story.

The game itself runs smoothly with 60+ FPS on high/extreme settings at 1440p on my Vega 64. However, MHW causes my discord to lag and chrome to run super slow. Sometimes alt tabbing makes me drop games with my friends (which can be detrimental to questing). Sometimes I simply drop games with my friends for reasons I cannot explain. It's NOT constant, but I would say it happens 1-2 times a night over our 2-3 hour sessions. When each "hunt" can be 15-50 minutes long, this becomes a major issue.

Additionally, playing with friends is about as clear as mud from a new player experience. Here is a bit of a tutorial: First you have to join a friend's "session," which is essentially the same server but you cannot see/interact with each other (except in 1 specific area). Then one player has to "post a quest" at their quest board. Then each person joining has to go their quest board and select "join a quest" and find the quest their friend posted.

If the posted quest is an "assigned" (read: storyline) quest, the player who posted the quest has to play until they get to a cutscene (usually spotting a monster) and only AFTER that can anyone join the quest. So if two players want to go through the storyline together, both have to play the assigned quest on their own, get through the cutscene, then one player has to drop their quest, and then join their friend's assigned quest.

None of this is explained in game as far as I can tell. I found this out reading forums. Not only is it a bit convoluted, but it's also not explained.

Even through all of the multiplayer headache and how the game seems to crash everything in my windows session around it, I still am playing it as often as I can. I really am enjoying the core gameplay and hope they fix the bugs surrounding this game. I think it's well worth a buy now, ESPECIALLY if you plan on doing single player as most of my headaches come from trying to play with friends. The bugs are nothing gamebreaking, but annoying enough to complain about.

7.5/10 as is for me, but 9.5/10 if they would fix the multiplayer and windows environment bugs.
