Great game, considering it's on sale I recommend it very much. Since I was playing on hardcore/survival mode, my review will be based on how the game played in that specific scenario.

The storytelling is great from an environmental standpoint, there are notes you can collect to give a bit of background that, while unnecessary to know to give you a good understanding of whats going on , is always welcome in my opinion. And even though I haven't read the novel, some light research leads to me believe the events of the game convey the actual story very well, if that's your thing.

I'll assume game-play is more important to most people so, "how is it", you may be asking? Well I believe it's an amazing example on what survival games should be, granted I played survival mode because I thought it sounded fun. It can be very fun having to conserve ammo, look around the levels and scrounge what you can from crates, lockers or safes. Having to keep tripwires in mind is also, while frustrating at times because things can be pretty spooky, is very important. I can't tell you how many times I died after cleansing the area of any hostiles, only to see a cool looking box, only to hear the faint click and hissing that signaled my swift demise. Some enemies did seem a bit bullet spongy, specifically the librarians. My only advise is to play VERY carefully, and maybe use a sticky pipe bomb or two to help get their health down to a more manageable level. Also, a specific type of ammo can be used as currency, which makes a lot more sense than I thought it would.

Speaking of pipe bombs, WEAPONS! Now I didn't use every single weapon, out of a mental need to stick with what I know until what i was using no longer seemed viable, but the ones i did use were not only fun, but effective. You have your standard weapons like an AK, double-barrel shotgun, and a revolver. But then you get into the fun stuff, such as your silent but deadly pneumatic gun ,which is just a BB gun which you can pump air into, and if you over-pressurize it, it WILL one hit most enemies. Or you can use what I will only refer to as the railway rifle (shout-out to fallout), which is also silent, but requires bolts as opposed to BB's. And in one of the later missions you do get a flame-thrower. And come on, it's a ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ flamethrower, what's not to love? All of these weapons can be customized in shops. Customization options include stocks, sights, lasers and silencers. And some other options for the guns I didn't end up using probably exist. Again these options are all available in the shops and can be purchased using the Special Ammo used as currency, or you could use that ammo as, well, ammo. I mean it makes sense, it's military grade ammunition that will give you rifles a lot more of a kick than normal. It also sets enemies on fire, which is cool.

TL;DR
Buy the ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ game. If you have some extra cash while it's still on sale, I'd say its a hell of a deal.

This game managed to claim a very special place in my heart. I've always thought the idea of a prequel is silly due to the fact I already know how things will end for the characters involved. But if there's a way to tell a compelling story that takes place before the events of the original, this is it. Everything from the soundtrack to the smallest environmental details had me engulfed in this already beautiful story. If you're considering buying this game and find yourself unsure, I can tell you in no uncertain terms that you will truly fall in love with this game, and I urge you to give it a chance if you haven't already. There is so much more I want to say, but I believe this is something best experienced without words that couldn't possibly do it justice.
