Game is brutal and amazing. The negative reviews are all just about the F2P switchover which should tell you something! It's not even a P2W switchover, just people don't like change.

I'm going to skip past the normal MMORPG Launch Queue junk that's in a lot of reviews.

This game lets you tune your character to how you feel like playing without having to mutli-toon or do full respecs. Wanna tank? Throw on your heavy armor and your sword n' shield. Want to heal, throw on a life staff and some cloth etc. It's a skill based system, very nice and open to move how you want. Crafting is good multiple ways to craft some of the same items, because sometimes it's just generic meat or wood that's needed. Gathering is a rather nice grind, you can just go out explore and gather and with that both crafting and gathering award some actual level XP. No mount's = Exploration, it's once again nice and it paces you and everyone out. There is fast traveling which is sufficient if your not completely impatient, and you unlock the way-points by exploring and finding them.

Combat is fun and not overly complicated. It allows a nice mix of specing your character, and actual skill in maneuvering and hitting with CD's that are meaningful but not so long that they become one use and annoying.

After seeing a few of the videos, the art style had turned me off as well as people branding it with the term “Battle Royale” I planned on just avoiding this title. It seemed a bit too bright and well, honestly everyone has been throwing BR’s without any thought at the wall to see what sticks. I finally ended up giving it a try.
One of the key things about this game that nobody is talking about is it performs like a platformer, the kind we had when the N64 first came out with that nice transition for most of the Nintendo titles at least going from 2d to 3d. It does take skill to get through the game and it’s not like some of the indie games out there where you have only pseudo control of your character. If you like the challenge of platformers, give this a try. The environment with the ‘beans’ being your characters and bright colors actually is tastefully done, when playing you’ll notice small shadings and details where everything isn’t just a layout of boxes to save on the poly counts.
There is an element of RNG to the game, but most of that comes with the players and most obstacles can be avoided or timed to give you the best speed run winning the race, when it’s a race. Most videos I saw were of 1 or 2 race type maps, but there are team games in the tournament as well as a memory type game.
The Sounds in the game are spot on and so is the soundtrack. I was pleasantly surprised by this as it as it ties in the whole package of the games experience. It’s a solid game and most importantly it is actually really fun and with that while you may rage out or go on tilt, you only seem to go on about it until the next match starts. The atmosphere the game creates is Fun first and then Competitive which allows you to grind out multiple matches chasing that ever elusive crown at the end like it’s nothing and never wearing you out.
Finally, this game supports M&K + Controllers, but this is one of those rare instances that I’m going to tell you to take the controller route.

Picked this up on sale, and while you could manually go in and do practically all the tweaks, possibly even setup batch files to do so this does the job and makes life simple. I don't have time to figure out everything for every game and setup shortcuts and double check that my cores didn't get parked again after a windows update, or that the game update didn't change for games that need to be thrown on a single core, this does the job. I also got the version with the memory cleaner which is rather useful to have in my other monitor and I can see when something starts getting 'leaky' and press it's big button to free up resources.

Having played earlier versions of Formicide before it was even Greenlit here on Steam. I can tell you that the base of the game itself is simply fun! Watch even the demo video of the game, now imagine some of your guildies and friends from other games inside as your mercielessly trying to destroy each other as awesome super ants!

If you want to experience true indie development, not this "We're gonna put in some 8 bit stuff and call it indie and retro" crap that has been plauging steam the last few years now, then give this a shot.
