Cheating is ubiquitous. Seriously, every game on Prime contains suspicious play, and Valve does extremely little about it. If you want to play with fair play, use faceit. Maps are reduced from CS:GO, no more overpass or train for example.

Drops frames badly on my 3600X and Vega 64 in moderately sized cities, on lower settings. Lack of graphics options. Ludicrous amounts of DLC. Not much challenge initially, and feels more like a sandbox game as a whole. Recommended if you really want to build a detailed city and don't care about performance, but not if you want to enjoy a challenge.

So, I understand that this game is well-appreciated, and I would agree that it is for good reason. This is a good game. The graphics are pretty nice, shooting feels good, and some of the level designs are pretty great too. This being said, I cannot recommend this game. If it had a demo version, sure, I'd honestly recommend giving it a blast, but it doesn't, and the only way to experience this game is by throwing down a quite sizeable chunk of money and going in blind.

Why don't I recommend this game? Simply put, if you haven't played Quake already, play quake instead. Sad to say, but I honestly feel that Quake is a better game in every way, even on modern systems. The aesthetics are better. The guns are better. The levels are better. It's scarier. It's free. And for me, one of the most important thing is that it RUNS better. Yes. I am quite shocked that I only manage to get around 160FPS on my perfectly capable rig (ryzen 3600, Vega 64) when playing this. To put this in perspective, on my system I can comfortably run CSGO at 350FPS and R6 Siege at 200FPS. Why is this important, you may ask? 160 FPS is more than enough? Well, it certainly is, but, with a game with this level of graphical fidelity, I would expect to play this game at a decent tablet on a low-end device. Quake comfortably runs at 100+ FPS on my laptop meaning I can plug in an Xbox controller and have some fun with friends (Yes, Quake is still GREAT fun with friends) wherever I happen to be. This is not possible with Dusk.

So, in short, imho Quake does everything this game does but better. I would be less scathing with my review if this game was more reasonably priced, or has a demo version, but that isn't the case.

Pros:

- Very cool music
- The slo-mo SUPERHOT-ish pick-up is very cool

WARNING: THIS GAME HAS MAJOR ISSUES WITH STUTTERING AND OPTIMISATION CAUSED BY DENUVO

IF YOU ALREADY OWN THIS GAME AND HAVE THESE ISSUES AND 8GB OR MORE OF RAM, IT IS BECAUSE OF DENUVO, NOT YOUR SYSTEM

At first, I thought this was due to my system not having enough RAM or my outdated CPU (i5 2500k, 8GB RAM paired with a Vega 64) and was prepared to simply not play this game until I had upgraded my computer. This was until recently, when I discovered a youtube video with some pretty shocking insight regarding Denuvo, which is the DRM measure used in addition to Steam to protect this game.

Through my own investigation the video I mentioned, I found that Denuvo seems to stall the game with validity checks every few seconds, and this affects Just Cause 3 particularly badly. This issue is often game breakingly bad, and at worst can lead to half second stutters every time you make an input to the game.

After realising this, and testing alternate versions of the game with Denuvo disabled, I realised:

ALTERNATE VERSIONS OF THE GAME WITH DENUVO DISABLED WORK FLAWLESSLY IN COMPARISON TO THIS

I would strongly urge anyone who has already bought this game and is having issues to try to source an alternate version of the game THAT DOESN'T HAVE DENUVO ENABLED FOR COMPARATIVELY BUTTERY SMOOTH AS HELL PERFORMANCE.

REMINDER: DO NOT ACQUIRE THIS GAME THROUGH ILLEGAL OR NEFARIOUS MEANS. BUY THE GAME AND SUPPORT THE DEVELOPER, REGARDLESS OF DRM.

Thanks for reading. Just thought it was worth sharing and shaming the anti-consumer practice of employing harmful, invasive DRM that only harms both games and gamers.

In accordance with Steam's terms of service, I will not be linking the video I have been referencing, but it can be found on YouTube using the search term "Denuvo".
