It's basically impossible to approach this review without bias. If JSRF has lived in your head rent-free for over two decades, this will finally put those demons to rest for a time. It's not perfect, but it makes me hope this isn't a one-and-done thing.

The good? A lot of it hits the JSRF buttons perfectly. The feel, the level design, the characters. I feel like the soundtrack doesn't have as many instant earworms as JSRF's did, but there's definitely a couple in there that are really good.

I finished the main story at about 7 hours, and I'm thinking maybe another 4 or 5 for the post-game stuff. Is this good value for money? For me, yes - for someone who hasn't been wanting a game like this for, again, two decades? If the aesthetic and gameplay pulls you in, I don't think you'll find something like it elsewhere.

The story starts off very strong, kind of meanders around in the middle, and finishes decently. The character designs are very strong, but their actually characters feel like they could've used more to distinguish them. The antagonist teams, similarly, started strong with the Franks being very defined, but the rest could've been exaggerated a little more to make them stand out, I think.

The flaws? The combat is definitely the lowest part of the game, and it's exacerbated by a wanted system that does literally nothing for me. It climbs too high too fast (just repainting over your own graffiti is enough to bump you up a level most of the time), the methods to resetting it are weirdly limited (imagine if going to a Pay and Spray in GTA put it out of business until you left the island), especially since you can pretty much just instantly rack up another star in under 30 seconds, and it's just not very fun. I really hope there's a way to turn them off in the post-game.

The gameplay loop is very cookie-cutter. You tag graffiti, do some small challenges, tag some more graffiti, fight the police, do a score attack game, do a dream sequence map, move on to the next environment. I feel like it could have definitely benefited from some kind of alternate final challenge, and mixing up the progression beats a bit more. More locations would've let them do the mixing up without it feeling like too much backtracking, but alas.

Finally, just a quality of life thing - it doesn't seem like there's an easy way to reset challenges that isn't quitting out and reloading the save. When you get to the long challenges in the post-game, this feels like it might get really annoying. I hope this isn't the case and I'm just missing something.

All in all, I really enjoyed this game and hope it inspires more games in this pretty small genre.
