Idk, it's definitely geared towards kids and lacking in player base and modern graphics/amenities. But, at the end of the day, it's a fun MMO-lite in a universe I enjoy with chill gameplay and RP potential.

There's always gonna be better games out there depending on what you're looking for, but for what this is it's surprisingly fun! If you like HTTYD (or dragons in general) and just want something chill with some fun mini games and idle activities like farming, this is a good place to waste a few hours!

Damn. I came into this game expecting something that just tickled my aesthetic preferences, but it's also just a load of fun. Arcade-y action, loads of collectibles and lore, fun dialogue, atmospheric horror (light on major jump scares or anything, which for me is a plus - I like getting spooked; not having a heart attack.)

I'm only 4 hours in and still in chapter 2, but I'm already hooked and can tell I'll be playing and enjoying this one for a long time to come! :D

One of the better Battle Royale style games I've played, and one that instantly clicked with me.

The only negative thing I can point out is that it's buy-to-play with a battle pass AND loot boxes, but even that I'm not losing sleep over when it's all cosmetic unlocks (with plenty of loot boxes and standalone goodies to earn/buy via in-game means and free currency too!)

The positives though?

- Just enough "skill based" mechanics and strategies without punishing a new/lower skilled player with convoluted systems. Plenty of melee weapons to balance out the aim-based ranged ones, simple countering and easy combos.

- A lot of the skill seems to come down to tactical positioning and movement than constantly having perfect inputs in a fight, which is a nice and relatively fresh take in such a game. More forgiving to an "older" (see - near 30,) more casual gamer like myself.

- Amazing customization. Characters are hero based (like Apex and the like,) but even with pre-defined characters they give you sliders and color customizations for skin/hair, on top of the usual skins and accessory/emote cosmetics.

- Varied playstyles. With both melee and ranged weapons in the game (on top of hero skills) there's lots of builds to try and experiment with.

- Weapon mastery system. Earn exp/prestige when using weapons and getting kills with them to earn unique skins, currency, and other cosmetic goodies, encouraging you to try new things and rewarding you with unique items.

- In-game quests/objectives. Sometimes you'll receive a bounty to kill a specific player in your match, go smack a bell in a tower, pray at a shrine, or other side objectives. This will give you some currency or some gear for the current match and helps to push players in directions they might not otherwise have chosen to explore and further breaking up normal playstyles/routes.

- Great optimization. Game has been running buttery smooth at nearly 200 FPS for me on an old 1080 Founders Edition.

Tl;dr - Probably the best Battle Royale I've (personally) tried with room for some improvement in the monetization aspects, but still enough in-game earnable rewards to make it feel alright as is. Excited to see how this game (hopefully) grows and improves over time as what we have so far is insanely fun.

If the game had been released in early access, then I would actually recommend it, surprisingly.,

The game is fun, has a great core concept and mechanics, looks great, and is reasonably well polished.

However, three things stand out to me:

- The bugs that DO exist are usually the most frustrating BS one can experience.
- The tutorial is so incredibly barebones and doesn't explain more than the very basic gameplay.
- It's far too repetitive.

First, the bugs:

When you die, you retain your gear but certain materials are dropped into a death box. This box can be retrieved like in many survival games to reclaim your items. But, frequently, the box will be placed in bizarre areas - impassible terrain, on top of buildings, etc - where it is literally inaccessible, even if you do take the time to go out of your way and return to the spot of your death.

On top of that, there's a lot of small UI glitches that really interrupt the game. Sometimes, I'll go to repair my gear but interacting with the individual pieces won't bring up its menu, so I have to annoyingly close and reopen the repair window for every piece of gear. Sometimes, my mana bar won't visually fill up so I don't know I can use my skills.

The tutorial:

It's basically just tell you the buttons to push and the basic items. You'll learn to walk, swing your sword, basic crafting, and about the big objective you need to protect.

What it won't tell you is about the element triangle that you'll need to optimize your builds for various encounters; It won't tell you about various biomes and their exclusive materials; You won't be taught about the various merchants and quest givers on the map; you aren't clearly told that there are different flavors of the various Jotun bosses that spawn; you aren't even taught that you can repair your gear or build defenses like gates and archer towers in your village.

If it was just a few of these details left out of the tutorial, then I'd be fine with the process of discovering them myself - there's definitely fun to be had in that experience. But this isn't Minecraft, where you'll be playing at your own leisurely pace (unless you want to play solo, but even then...) You're surround by 9 other idiots waiting for you, with time ticking by and the difficulty ramping up with each night. At least give us some idea of what to expect.

Repetition:

While it's definitely an issue, and one brought up by a lot of people, I think it's actually the least concerning of the games flaws. However, it's still a slight problem for the game's replayability.

The classes are fun and just unique enough to warrant trying, and there's plenty of challenges and achievements to go for. However, the build up to that is always going to be the same - sprint around the forest collecting wood and rocks, building up gear, etc. This is fine in a game like Minecraft where this slow start is expected on every playthrough, but in Tribes of Midgard you're going to hit that restart point WAY more often and WAY more frequently.

On top of that, your starting point is ALWAYS the same. The village is always in the middle of the forest with its defenses and merchants laid out in the same way. The world around you is at least randomized (albeit with the same general distance between biomes in my experience,) but again - you'll be slogging through the beginning experience far too often for it to remain fresh and fun.

The enemies are always the same too - same dudes in the same biomes. This is once again okay on paper, but you also have the same flavor of enemies attacking your base every night - little shadow guys. Cool, so every night it's most "efficient" to have lightning weapons to match their element, but it would be cool if each match had a different "theme" of sorts - I might queue into a game where the nightly enemies are the normal shadow guys, but the next one I might see ice or fire. They already do this with the big Jotun bosses, so why not encourage more build flexibility elsewhere, too?

Also, the building mechanic in the game is hardly utilized. You've got an awesome set of Fortnite-esque building tools for setting up structures, but 0 reason to use any - except for ramps to get up to higher spots on the map. I have yet to see anyone use floors or walls for anything, or ANY reason to ever do so. If we had reason for using them, perhaps there would be more incentive for new strategies that might mix up the gameplay, but so far there just isn't.

So... Yeah. Tl;dr - it's an early access game. It's loads of fun, but I really feel like it could use more time in the oven before it is right to consider this a full release. I legitimately THOUGHT it was an early access game until I brought it up to a friend and he corrected me by having me look at the store page again.

Give it a tiny bit longer to iron out the issues and get a BIT more content and it'll be golden.

Great game - wonderful mechanics, easy to learn and hard to master, good monetization. Feels like dodgeball meets Splatoon - matches are quick and way more fun than they are salt-inducing; even when you lose, it's over and you re-queue in an instant.

However, I can't mark it as recommended until matchmaking is fixed. Getting put in regions way outside where I live with insane latency, matched against a full clan of 4 people when I'm queued as a solo player or duo party, etc. For a fast paced and competitive game, this really ends up in frustration and little opportunity to get better.

It's like Slay The Spire with tactics-based gameplay instead of just stationary RPG turn-based fare. If either of those are appealing to you, you'll find plenty to like in this game.

Plenty of unlocks (as well as a "cheat code" to instantly unlock them all if you're tired of unlock grinding and would rather just have all the options available right away!) to work towards that only add to the depth of the gameplay.

Add on a tiny bit storytelling, lore, and characterization on top of that which might change the exact story your are playing through on each run, and which side quests and decisions you make... You've got an insanely repeatable rogue-like deck builder with both familiarity and new innovations to be found; easy to get into but with enough new ideas to really keep you playing... *stares at clock* way past your bed time when you have to work in the morning.

The negative review is almost entirely for the cash grab nature of the game.

Every other facet of the game is fine, and I admit I enjoy it more than I thought I would. It's a game about girls with boobs kicking monster ass, and it's free. I can't fault the overall aesthetics and imperfect launch or a few janky mechanics.

However... almost everything in the game is behind a paywall.

I have yet to see a single skin available for a reasonable price - additional hairstyles, outfits, ears/tails, wings, weapon skins, races... All of that is behind a paywall, and a steep one at that. There are a few categories of cosmetics that can be earned/purchased via in-game money only, which I've outlined at the bottom of this review.

Tl;dr, the quality of the gameplay is forgivable given it being an early access title and the number of developers. I don't even have a problem with the F2P/gacha mechanics, personally. But for the love of god, please lower the prices on your "micro"transaction items.

I'll probably keep playing, but I have no intention of spending money on it until the price is lowered.

Now, a few tips for those playing the game:

Contrary to what people have posted in these reviews, there are a *few* specific types of cosmetics that can be acquired in game with no real life money:

1. Chokers (necklaces)
2, Hats and head gear
3. Gun skins
4. Capes

These can be acquired from the free loot boxes you earn by playing and logging in each day, or bought from merchants in the hub for currency you earn entirely in game.

Also, while there is a stamina system, it doesn't seem like stamina is needed for most activities. On top of that, you can freely regen your stamina by showering in the game (and not even the nude shower scenes that you unlock for real money - even the showers out near the battlefield will do!)

An expansion that took away more than it added. Fewer planets to explore, less content to partake in, fewer interesting guns to collect in a looter shooter. New subclasses were OP on launch in PvP and are now getting nerfed in a way that will also weaken them in PvE. Story and general expansion content is fine, but it cost the removal of far, far more than it added.

Bungie has promised content will be updated and rotated in and out of the game as this occurs as part of their Destiny vault system. Yet, what old content was left in the game was hardly updated to make it relevant in alongside what little new content was added, leaving little reason to revisit it, so why bother even keeping it under their own logic? And why bother look forward to future content (new and returning) when it comes at the expense of removing more along the way?

As someone with mixed (but generally positive) feelings towards Destiny 2 after it's transition onto Steam and F2P business model, a lot was riding on this release that could have really solidified the game as a go to suggestion for F2P games. Now I hardly feel a reason to play myself. Content I would have been interested in chasing due to missing out on it before is gone, and the added content is generally a lot of the same enemies we've been fighting, events we've been participating in, activity types we've been grinding already for years.

If you haven't played Destiny 2, it may be worth trying out to experience once. But it's hard to recommend when other games are available for free and are only adding content, not taking it away, and are adding innovative new content in each release... Not throwing us at hoards of the same basic enemies with the same tired skill sets we've had for years.

TL;DR - It's an alright game that gets boring and repetitive fast: Fight same types of enemies in the same context again and again, with the only difference being the guns you used and the environments you fight in. This expansion took reduced the pool of available weapons and removed entire planets and maps. You do the math.

Awesome Slay The Spire-like deckbuilding roguelike, but instead of building a deck for your single hero, you're building a deck of hellspawn to fill the layers of your demon train.

I'm just a few hours in and the game is satisfying and rewarding as hell (no pun intended.) Watching the synergies of your different monsters and spells activate each turn against those of your enemies is super exciting, and of course that feeling we all know well of stumbling upon that one awesome card that fits your build perfectly.

It's a bit easy at first (at least if you've experienced similar games) but still has a chance to rip that sense of security out from under you. Plus, I can't really complain about an easy win on the lowest difficulty since I had plenty of fun with it either way. I'm excited to play with the increased difficulty after unlocking it in my first victory run, and to unlock more of the clans to play with their different mechanics.
