It is a good shooter. It doesn't quite live up to it's DOOM name. It's not as fast, levels are rather linear and the soundtrack is underwhelming imo.

Gameplay and movement feels great, just a tiny bit slow for my tastes. Most of the demons fire projectiles which can be dodged. This inspires a fast-paced run-and-gun style of play. Along with the loud and energy-packed soundtrack, most of the encounters gives a great surge of excitement, in an adrenaline-rush sort of way. The story stays in the back seat most of the time.

The game looks great, both art and graphics. Some vast areas I've had fps-dips below 1/2 of my regular. So it's so-so optimized. The sound seems rather compressed and lacking in dynamics. Fine details are completely drowned out by the soundtrack and demon-howls.

One thing I missed from classic DOOM was the sense of danger when exploring a level. Few demons are lurking the level. Traps feel more like chore. You hit a trigger, which locks you in, until every demon is slain. Makes the game feel repetetive. Some levels will hinder you from backtracking by closing a door behind you. Not uncommon for modern shooters, but imo a step down from classic DOOM.

Dispite my complaints, the game has been a lot of fun. Campaign took ~10 hours on medium. And I see myself coming back to challenge harder difficulties a few months down the line. Multiplayer is also great, but given that it has paid DLC, I wouldn't recommend it.

EDIT: Revised and edited the text for hopefully a better reading experience.
