Now updated with Mistlands, the Valheim devs finally show redemption. After the secretly killed EA roadmap on release and the dead silence that followed many months after, I can now gladly recommend the game. It now overall feels much better when you don't get an abrupt stop reaching dark metal gear. Mistland is done really well, be it monster and map design, atmosphere or challenge. I really like the new item and even building options, some of it we saw with the smaller update released a few months earlier.

While the major update could and should have been released faster, at least it was good and that's what matters at the end. If the devs keep moving forward like that, they get my full support.

Teardown Early Access is already a lot of fun, despite some optimization issues here and there. No crashes so far. I like the destruction with explosives, the lighting effects and overall enjoyable look of the game. Little details like the TV News reporting your illegal activities or the very enjoyable driving physics makes me want to keep playing non stop.

Don't expect a perfect physic simulations though. For example some buildings will not collapse if only one Voxel is still connected. Teardown has a nice soundtrack and every material has it's own durability, look and sound adding to the immersion.

The missions are amazing and I'm looking forward to more content updates and other stuff we'll probably get in the upcoming EA year. In missions you have as much time as you need to prepare your plan and escape. Once you triggered the alarm you have 60 seconds to collect all objectives and make it to the escape vehicle. But there're also destruction missions which are a lot of fun, just blowing things up.
You can tell that the developers spend a lot of time thinking about creating a challenge, while still leaving enough room for people to enjoy playing it casually.

I can recommend this game as I had a tonne of fun so far and will keep playing. I was really amazed on how different this game feels like, something new we rarely see in gaming these days. I do hope the developers find more people using this engine to create other games or game modes, maybe even some manag to create a coop experience or true open world. I'd love to see this happen. Firefighting simulator maybe?

Edit: Current patch made the game crash in multiplayer sessions after a while. Can't recommend at this point.

Currently playing it with friends and it's exactly how I imagined a Definitive Edition of AoE3 would play like.
Overall there's not too much to say as compared to the original they improved a lot on the graphics, which makes it look like a modern like RTS.

Performance is good, it could be better on some parts. So far, games never crashed.
The KI needs some work, especially units are sometimes getting stuck or stop attacking an enemy for no reason.
There's currently also a bug that makes it hard to play with friends who own the game on Xbox gamepass. The only workaround so far seams to be to have the xbox player search and set the "spectator time" or whatever it's called, to zero and search again. Somehow this seams to allow to play with friends.

I'd say it needs some bug fixing here and there but other than that it's great fun even if you only play koop vs KI or multiplayer or solo kampagne. Enough for 20€

I still like it more than AoE or AoE 2, which always felt like the more hardcore RTS to me. It's nice to have multiplayer card decks unlocked right away. That way you don't have a disadvantage to longer players and you can have fun from the first hour.

Attention! Current status of the game:

Early Access is for balancing, so I'll change this review back to positive onces this is resolved.

The latest patch increased the money grinding, reduced the luma Temtem (shiny Pokemon) rate and added a grind-2-play Park, that will cost money to enter and your cards to catch Temtem there will expire in a week.

Currently not recomended!

TLDR of the latest patch:
- increased grind of lumas from 1/6000 to 1/8000
- added park that needs grinding to access
- cards to catch temtem inside this park expire on their own after one week
- some kind of promo-code system
- selling items now will only give 50% of the price instead of 70%
- no changes on very expensive cosmetic items
- breeding is now more difficult and time consuming because of nerfing a certian buff item

Smells like MTX!

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------
old review:

Same as Pokemon or better?

Content in this EA:
There's a lot of content for an early access game already.
Of the 161 Temtem (what the "Pokedex", in this game called Tempedia says) are about 50% released. There are currently 3 large islands which are supposed to be extended to a total of 6 islands. A few houses have a "WIP" sign in front, so there're either quests you can't do yet or other activities, like owning a house, whom are not implemented yet. You won't be able to start a quest that you can't finish, at least I didn't encounter one yet.

As of writing this review I've played about 52 hours.

Things Temtem does differently:
The for me biggest difference is the lack of RNG (randomness) compared to Pokemon. A move will always hit the opponent and there're no critical hits. There are still STAB (same type attacks) who get a damage boost and also weaknesses that result in higher damage taken/dealt. Moves with status effects will trigger 100% of the time, unless the opponent has an ability/type that doesn't allow it. The only random parts left are the static values of the Temtem and which 'DNA' values it has. Those are later relevant for breeding, more on that later.

The stamina system allows for a better flow of the battles. With random encounters your team will have full stamina and you're able to fight without running back to the healing station. In longer trainer battles the stamina has a tactical effect of you picking the right move (effect, damage, stamina usage). You also can see the opponents stamina to create your own strategy. If a Temtem is exhausted it can still attack on the cost of it's own health.

Two-vs-two battles are the default battle schematics in this game. It's used through synergy moves, that have different effects if used with another Temtem on your side from a certain element. There are also attacks that behave differently and make the battles dynamically and add another layer of enjoyable strategy.

Temtem never forget a move and you can simply drag and drop them back in. With this chance you can test combinations and you don't need to worry about accidently forgetting a good move.

The story:
I personally enjoy the story with it's little twists. Nothing overly demanding but also not flat. I'm sure they'll flesh out parts of it. There are certainly parts where I said to myself: "Yeah Gamefreak would never do this". Big story spoiler: For example the crash landing of the Narwal or the prison part where you get a whole new team of Temtem to fight your way out.. I enjoyed the overall light hearted way how the NPCs talk. There are a few easter-eggs/homage on memes. Some dialogues are quite funny and even break the third wall. Nothing excessive, so don't worry if you don't like memes.

Atmosphere:
Enjoyable music (though it can get a bit repetitive), also the colorfulness of the graphics take some time to get used to. Positive is the general lack of totally ugly Temtem. I've notice like 3 - 4 that I absolutely didn't like.

Breeding Temtem:
A Temtem can only breed a certain amount of times, til it becomes infertile. You can buy items for in game money to guarantee certain DNA values to be transferred to your eggs. This does remove another level of randomness. The limited amount of breeding a Temtem is probably my only grip with the game.

Things to keep in mind:
As always with EA there'll be a lot of changes. One recent change made breeding more expensive. This could be all fine if the later 3 islands and further content make it easier to earn money. Currently money is limited and can only be stocked through catching and releasing Temtem for little coins. As this is tied to the whole breeding process of the end-game, this is a critical balancing part of the game. As of now it's not possible to tell if this will develop into the right direction. So be aware.

Is this a Pokemon clone?:
In short, yes. In a longer answer. No, actually not. It does indeed copy stuff, the battle mechanics are very similar, the whole naming of attack moves or items is similar. Usually they picked the equivalent other name. Say a Pokeball is a Temcard and a Pokedex is a Tempedia and many other little things. They are noticable but not on an annoying level.
If you look for a game like Pokemon, then Temtem is very much on the same level. It's a monster collecting game, with turn based attacks.

Difficulty:
Maybe partly because of the missing Temtem, the difficulty of this game is between average and hard. There are fights, especially the Dojo leaders, who will challenge you. You can easier beat them if you decide to use many items like revive or salves, if you desire. It feels more like the early generations of Pokemon (Gen1, Gen2), where you did get a lot less help. As a Pokemon veteran, I'd say the game is fun because of it's challenge. Some Dojo leader will force you to grind a bit (not overly excessive though) to have a chance. But keep in mind this is Early Access, so it's open to changes any moment. Simply adding more Temtem-tamer in the wild could make grinding obsolete.

Not tested:
Coop mode. I'm sure the difficulty varies a lot if you play together with someone in coop. Also if they release the market/trade house later on, as well as more Pokemon Temtem to cover type advantages, you might have an easier way through the game.

The bad:
Personally I have some difficulties to remember the Temtem names or the story relevant locations. The points mentioned in the breeding part. And that's about it, I don't think the lack of Temtem is a bad thing. Aside from the longer starting area, I'm constantly switching out Temtem and try different things. I just wish leveling low level Temtem would get a bigger exp bonus. I'm ok with high level Temtem to level a bit slower. Some cosmetic items need price adjustments.

Performance:
There are no noticeable lags on my system. First week of release had crashes and quest bugs. The server crashes where mostly resolved at the third day. Some main quest issues a few days later. As of now it's totally playable to reach the third island. I've notice no crashes of the game anymore in the last 3 days. There's a notice when the sever will go offline for maintenance (10 minutes timer). There aren't many bugs, no game breaking stuff anymore. Everyone who logged in and was missing it's Temtem, relogged and they were back. Overall save to buy and enjoy.

Conclusion;
Must buy if you enjoy/ed Pokemon. It does a lot of things right or better. You can play it solo without problem and you get online/coop options on top. I enjoy seeing other player walk around. And Temtem follow you :3

The good:
- great characters
- enjoyable quests
- enjoyable exploration
- good looking characters
- great variety of weapon and armors
- great world and fantasy that is not over the top
- reasonable characters you can sometimes even relate too
- dirty, sometimes helpless mood. People are dying left and right, so of course it's not happy

The neutral:
- decent music but sometimes not
- combat isn't the best but it's also not bad
- decent graphics, sometimes washed out textures in close up
- sometimes the companions are usefull, othertimes they die in seconds

The bad:
- sometimes too much brown
- sometimes the lip sync is off
- some buildings/pictures are reused
- the game is pretty performance hungry
- no way to play without 2 people in the party
- no visible weapon on the character (without mod)
- some buildings are just empty with nothing to loot
- no way to unequip the second main weapon (why??)
- way too restrictive map boarders and cliffs and other obsticles hitboxes
- glowing lootables and ressources (seriously I hate this but other can't without anymore)
- small crates and chests are nice, but you never really find that "big stash" that makes you smile.

Warning:
If you can't run this game on ultra settings the game will look like a potatoe. Maybe with shadows and textures down to high but other than that, don't even bother.

Performance:
GTX980, i7-4790k, 32GB 1600 RAM, Win10. Everything Ultra but Textures and Shadow distance, draw distance on default (ultra) on a 1080p screen. Mostly 60FPS, sometimes dips to ~55FPS for a few seconds or in areas. GPU and CPU are moslty running on 100% for this game (I guess I got to upgrade soon). ...well at least it's utilizing all hardware there is....
Fast loading times, no SSD needed.

Recommended:
Play with an xbox360 or similar controller. Feels much better that way. If not, you can toggle running with "z" key (or might be y on QUERTZ keyboards). Shadow distance and texture are the biggest performance hits.

After finishing the game adjustment
Overall I'd say the game stays true to what it was at the beginning. Some of the quests felt more dragging than needed, especially the last 6 hours could've been less "walk from A to B to A" like. It didn't change my overall enjoyment of the game. I had a game breaking bug where I couldn't continue the main quest that got fixed. Still had a week of no play because of that. Overall I'd buy the next Spider RPG (that's not sci-fi setting) without hesitation.

Amazing game, lots of fun with friends. Because of the randomly chosen bosses and items you have a high replay value. The balancing makes it possible to play with friends even when you're a higher level. Works flawless where Souls games fail to create a fun co-op.
