tl;dr: not worth playing despite being a very good game at the core

A great game full of interesting mechanics and stuff to do. Hard, yet extremely interesting and fun to figure out and explore. Simply walking or boating around the map is pure joy.

However, the enjoyable survival-exploration core of the game is completely overshadowed by the negatives surrounding it. The game is very unfriendly to newcomers. Tutorial quests will cover the basics but all the important stuff is on wiki only. Default ui is garbage, so everyone (even the devs allegedly) uses community made clients that improve basically everything. My specific nitpick is that some progress takes too much real time, like actual days to get some exp, create an item or to build something but it’s an mmo, so eh, I guess. Combat is unintelligible and very clunky. Moderation of anything is nonexistent, bots, scripts, cheats, bad words, anything goes but not in a good way. But you can get used to this and the devs are working on improving stuff like combat and ui.
The worst thing in the game is absolutely no way to protect yourself from geared-up folks. And the geared-up folks will most likely raid your base, kill you, steal and/or destroy your stuff or simply kill you passing by without taking anything or saying a word, setting you back weeks of real time if not straight to square one (cuz when you die you lose your levels, your skills, your recipes and stuff you spent hours and hours crafting and gathering, if they take it) and giving you immense paranoia. They do it not for resources, just for lulz. All you can do is cry about it and start over. As a freshly spawned naked-ass or as a slightly advancced axe wielding strawhat wearing farmer, even as a group of advanced farmers you can't do anything to a high-leveled armored and armed clan member, you won't damage him (literally) nor will you outrun him.
Steamrolling less advanced players, hunting newbies and griefing are local customs and traditions that you can’t escape cuz your only option to play the game is a single global pvp server. This alone sucks all the fun from exploration, gathering and other fun stuff cuz you lose the game not due to your mistakes but due to other players finding you.
Some sort of moderation, like an anticheat, a report system or something to discourage experience ruining behaviour on a system level would be very nice (the game has mechanics of crimes and punishment but they're very expensive for new charachters and easy to circumvent for advanced charachters), it won't abolish griefing or noob-hunting but it may decrease it. Also a pve server or a single-player/coop mode would be pure godsend even for like 40-60 bucks. But alas, the devs will never implement any of these things cuz uuhhhhhh..... things......

You might have some genuine fun with a group of friends and a wiki, until you meet your first noob-hunter. Or if you’re already in a clan, i guess. Other than that don’t bother, play something better.
