Early Access Review
If you've been wanting an authentic Smash-like experience on PC and have found the other entries into the "platform fighter" genre lacking, this might just be the one you've been looking for. Slap City might be somewhat barebones at the time of this review due to it's early access state leaving it room to grow in the form of content, but the gameplay is all there.
  • Unlike Smash itself and a few other platform fighters, the combat and movement in this are blazing fast. Minimal lag on movement options and attacks results in combat having a frantic pace, yet always feeling well in your control. Dashing has no penalties and allows you your full breadth of options out of it, wavedashing is present and simple to perform, the clutch button is an amazingly varied tool, allowing you to suppress fast fall, reverse the momentum and direction of attacks, and many other applications. The game is absolutely built to allow for player expression with few artifical restrictions on your capabilities. Hitstun values are crafted to allow for a healthy combo game
  • Ludosity has a unique style which is absolutely present here, as this game features characters and enviornments built not simply as functions and options to serve as decoration for the gameplay but personalities and worlds originating from Ludosity's other works much like Smash itself. One can tell there was a lot of heart put into this game, with each character showing parts of their personalities through their movesets and animations. Fishbunjin is probably the most (in)famous example with his array of bodybuilding centric moves and ever constant flexing even when hanging from ledges or disappearing into the distance.
  • The netcode is amazing. I've played several games from the west half of the US with friends on the east coast and been able to play normally, with the exception of a few minor hiccups which only result in slowdown rather than teleportation, disconnection, or heavy unresponsiveness.
  • The community is great right now. The developer discord sees activity at almost all times of day and is full of people playing and willing to help out those new to it. The developers themselves are a common sight and talk with the community, accepting suggestions, resolving issues or just chatting.
It's rare that I get to feel so positive about a game but I really do feel Slap City deserves it. The game's pricing is set to increase as development goals are met and it's an absolute steal as it is right now. If you're interested in what I've said, then please do give it a shot.
