Too many game breaking bugs--too many silently or delayed game breaking bugs. I can't tell you how many times I've heard of (and experienced myself) people having their saves ruined because of a bug that happened 30 hours previously and only gets discovered when you're on the final mission. For a game where New Game + is a central feature, it's wild that there's such a prevalent bug that can destroy your entire New Game + chain. For me, it was commandeering a pirate vessel and making it my "home" ship. But there are so many. Cannot recommend this game when such an easily fixable bug goes unanswered for so long. Devs don't care about you, so don't care about this game.

Genuinely offended.

Proteus is an experiemental game that examines the relationship between the visual and auditory environment. IE: Your background music is based on what things are around you.
What that means:
  • Every rendered object has an area of effect melody
  • Your proximity determines volume of said melody;
  • It's easy to be overwhelmed by the ruckus.

But:
  • Despite exploration being the focus of the game this is poorly designed. The forward movement button actually moves about 15-45 degrees clockwise, depending on your resolution;
  • In fact, the game has trouble handing different resolutions at all. If you find you're not getting the entire picture try opening in the forced windowed option;
  • The visual elements, while not a focus, are inexcusably poor. Nearly everything in the game lacks definitions to the point where players are often left without any indication of what it is they're looking at.

So:
  • This game really lacks the ability to be immersively played. Most reviews list that it is best enjoyed with narcotics. I neither condone, nor condemn this statement;
  • If you are interested in the experiment, simply be prepared for the inoperable controls and confusing landscape.

Successes Nonetheless:
  • The palette is dreamy;
  • The excitement of recognizing a melody, or searching for and finding one is real.;
  • If you have an ear for these things the journey is real.

Ultimately:
  • I can't recommend this game; because while it is a success in terms of its experiment it is not a success in its playability.

A great arcade style VR game. Great for those new to VR. A tremendous workout to reach the leaderboards.

Fun enough. The controls are terrible, absolute garbage but you are playing a baby so it kind of fits? But at the same time, it's immersion breaking.

No confirmation on the returning to main menu button, and then you lose your checkpoints. That was a major piss off.

But it's fun. Oh, and remember to bind something to the throw function for an achievement early on that is 100% unrelated to the rest of the game.

In terms of the actual narrative of the game I was a bit impressed. I quit after accidentally going back to the main menu and ending up at the beginning of the game again--so I'm not super sure how the game ends. But if it ends how I think it does then I'm glad they didn't go with the cliche.
