What I liked:
The game is highly replayable (randomly generated maps and objectives, "seasonal" leaderboards for endless mode, frequently updated by developer, and more). Challenging in the way that it makes you want to keep trying to complete the runs given to you or find the right setup to succeed better or more easily; the developer have the right formula going here for that. Great achievements and about 20-30% of them are pretty challenging; a handful of the achievements were particularly challenging for me and since I was mostly interested in just completing them all...for a while it's what sucked up most of the hours I spent playing this game (close to 100 hours).

What I disliked:
The second character that was added months ago, the Assessor, is very poorly designed and seems very slow and borderline frustrating to use and maneuver around with; Good news is the developer recently announced they will update the character to make it better. Like I mentioned in what I like...a handful of achievements were particularly challenging and for the most part not that fun to try and chase after ultimately; they became tedious and annoying to achieve since this game has several types of randomization going on. The three prestige mode achievements, including the "compounding interest" achievement, and Assessor-involved achievements were annoying to get completed.

I recommend:
If you like horde survival games and know that randomization of the correct aspects are what will keep you coming back to a game like that, then this game is doing that correctly. Give this a purchase and you won't regret it; know that so far the developer has been very active with the game and listening very much to the community to keep updating the game often. I'm glad I purchased and supported the developer, very well done original game, best game I've played of this style since Dig Dug (haha)!

I wouldn't be surprised if future updates bring me back to this game since the developer is doing a great job with it so far!

I wish I could recommend this game, but first considering the fact I am posting this review in 2023 when the game released in 2012, there are better options in terms of this game play style that exist by now, and for this price or better. Apparently the second game "Hotline Miami 2: Wrong Number" is worse than this one.

This game has great music, great art style, the action and gore is there as advertised...and that's about it.

This game has no replay factor to it, so once you play through the story once which involves reading dialogue as cutscenes - which by the way some of it is forced that you can't skip (the worst part is when you have to retry the tedious unoriginal "boss" fights and have to watch the dialogue scroll through over and over again with each restart). You can't rebind controls either, so forget about consideration for other controller types or even accessibility needs.

At most the only thing that made me invest up to 21 hours in this game, which is what brought me back to it in 2023, was chasing after the achievements and completing them 100% - I will say the achievements are well balanced, and for this game the achievements actually encourage and bring on some replay factor for it...it will give you a reason to actually care for the A+ ratings for each mission, care to find the often-lame masks, and unlock all the weapons.

I wouldn't say this game is even worth the current price of $9.99, $4.99? Maybe. $1.99, oof still better options. Free? Probably best by now.

Early Access Review
This game will always be worth the buy, it continues to be improved and is still the poster child for all other zombie/survival games that exist in the world. But, it seems this game will never be fully completed. It's just the video game version of a never ending hell.
