Game Quality
The game is pretty mediocre. To put a point on that, I'm kind of fuzzy as to whether or not it was worth the $1.79 I spent on it.

If you filter out positive reviews and then sort by most helpful you will find both comprehensive and meaningful criticisms of the game, most of which closely mirror my feelings on the game. Each of the top 3 reviews (linked below) accurately articulate where and why the gameplay falls short.

Additionally, I noticed that almost every time you pick up a note there is a scary sound accompanying it, especially during the latter half of the game. It gets to be pretty absurd at a point.

Refunds
The only reason people are up in arms about the "mass refund exploitation" is because of the ostensible harm being done to the individual behind EMIKA_GAMES; the connection between the preponderance of refunds and the dev's personal well-being is too direct for many people's comfort. In other words, if a bunch of people decided to refund Monopoly en masse after playing one game and deciding they didn't like it, no one would express concern about Hasbro being "exploited" for free entertainment. This dichotomy is fine, and it makes sense. After playing the game though, I am doubtful as to the existence of the boogeyman that is the individual who enjoyed the game and then subsequently refunded it. Personally, if people are provided with the option to follow through on the notion that something wasn't worth their money, they shouldn't be derided for taking advantage of that option. You don't have to agree with that, but the fact of the matter here is that the situation is decidedly much more nuanced than "refund bad."

I do not recommend your purchase Witch Hunt if you don't have at least a little background playing first person shooters. The monsters in the game are frail but deadly and will punish you for poor gameplay and missed shots. To fight them, you are supplied with a flintlock pistol and musket, which are single-shot weapons with extensive reload animations. You can always fall back on your silver saber, but constantly trading melee blows with the monsters is, broadly speaking, not an awesome strategy. Though it sounds unpleasant, these challenging aspects of the game and its relative high difficulty are most of what makes it fun. As for the narrative portions of this game, they are decidedly weak, so if you're shopping for engaging writing or dialogue I'd pass on this one.
When playing, the two main objectives of the game are:
1. To search around the map for valuables (i.e. gold, which one can spend on skillbooks and items). You can also find a limited number of skillbooks around the map. Skillbooks and items will help you to navigate the map, survive, and fight things.
2. To kill the bosses. Each boss has their own respective learning curve, so expect to die on a pretty consistent basis when fighting new ones.

Achievements:
I earned all of the achievements in 3 playthroughs comprising 12 hours of gameplay. The achievements are all pretty straightforward except for the Necronomicon achievement, which requires you to sit in a water tub (located in Bellville near the bridge to the forest) and take ticks of (freeze) damage until you die, which, with the use of the 'Second Chance' skillbook, will cause you to be resurrected inside of a previously locked secret room with the Necronomicon inside of it.

Early Access Review
Though I was a bit hesitant, I refunded this game after getting all of its achievements in under 2 hours. At first, I was able to live with myself. I was a premier video-gamer, and I had proven it. Why shouldn't I refund the game? It was a badge of honor to complete a game and refund it. Hadn't I earned it?

This broken logic was what I used to stave off the terrible epiphany that had awaited me from the moment I clicked the refund button. Though I cannot express the transcendent energy with which I was delivered this revelation, I am able to articulate its message: It wasn't worth it to refund the game. I have suffered for my sins. At the time of this writing, I am afflicted daily by paroxysmal episodes of shudderingly malignant guilt that I fear will inevitably lead to an ever-spiraling state of psychosis. I know that soon the weight will become too much to bear, and I will ultimately -

...

I will ultimately repurchase the game, having endured a more sinister undoing than any physical torture may hope to accomplish. Bid you good judgement, dear reader, that you may heed my warning and refrain from making the same damnable mistake that has caused me, in the lowest of spirits, to write this missive.
