Do not bother playing F2P.
The variance in skill level of players at lower ranks in competitive makes trying to get out on your own a complete mess, unless you get a bunch of friends of decent skill level together.
When you have a bunch of former LEs, DMGs, etc mixed with new players it is as much a mess as you'd expect.
