WE END AS WE BEGAN

On an actual review note, I got Dark Sector after DE set it to Free due to the current ARG, but I went into the game without any expectations other than "It's from 2009". Admittedly, I had to spend like 5-10 minutes actually setting up the game to play nice by a few config edits to FOV and aspect ratio, and I had to fiddle around with keybinds, but other than that it effectively worked out the box for me.

As for the gameplay, bluntly put: If you don't like Gears Of War, you won't like Dark Sector. You absolutely feel how similar movement plays out to Gears Of War, even if it doesn't have the intricacies that make Gears so fluid. However, the Glaive itself, and how well integrated into normal gunplay it became for me, was such a nice feeling as someone so familiar with the Glaive archetype from Warframe. It's so fascinating to see how these pieces in Dark Sector eventually evolved into the Warframe we know it as now.

As for the story... whilst it's certainly melodramatic at times, it isn't all that bad. It does serve its purpose of driving the player from area to area, from engagement to engagement. I found the Black Market Dealer endearing, as limited as his lines may be, and Yargo sticks in my memory aside from Hayden himself.

Overall, 8/10. Doesn't overstay its welcome, gunplay feels good, and there's really nice progression in both strength and difficulty. Especially worth grabbing while it's cheap/free.

I didn’t liberate the Creek just to watch Democracy die at the hands of a corporation. And I’m glad I won’t be seeing such a fate today.

It's Hotline Miami with Bullet Time. What more could you ask for?

Fantastic game that you're gonna love the entire way through.

Can't wait to put another 200 hours in, at least.

A beautiful journey from beginning to end.
The narrative of self forgiveness for past mistakes, and to hold onto hope in a world embroiled in struggling is so powerful, especially at the time of writing. I won't go into spoilers, but to summarize, damn. World looks a little brighter.

As for the gameplay, the feel is very familiar to that of DD1, especially in regards to the Inn and the Roads. Comparisons to that of Camps and Hallways, with each Node being equivalent to that of a Room are apt. If you wanted to make more overall comparisons, DD2 runs are very much so like Crimson Court Dungeons, but done in one run.

The biggest thing in combat is how varied the trinkets feel, and how much you can exploit their synergies in addition to skills. The token system itself is very fun, and a way to convey different ideas in gameplay concisely, once you understand it.

If there was one complaint, it's just the want of more content, which can honestly be said for the majority of games. Otherwise, Darkest Dungeon II is still a fantastic game worth playing regardless of if you enjoyed the first or not, because that's the design philosophy. DD2 is not meant to replace DD1, and that single design choice has given this game so much identity.

Thank you, Red Hook, for yet another fantastic game.

I used to have hope. I used to believe that 343 could've done something right. I used to just hold out that tiniest bit of hope after those trailers.

Halo Infinite is not a return to form. It is the final nail in the coffin that was built in 2012.

Oh, what could be said about XCOM 2 that already hasn't been said. As a pillar of a tactical shooter, XCOM 2 remains one of my most enjoyed games for years now, not to mention the excellent additions of War Of The Chosen and the Tactical Legacy Pack. The game remains fun to play for sure, but mods purely enhance the experience to a new level not possible before. Highly recommend the game.

10/10 would savescum again.
