When games say they are free to play, it's subjectively a lie, since time is in itself a currency.

For the time that I paid to invest in the game's content, it's quite worth it.

It's a solid MMORPG with lost of little fun missions, events, and details that you can enjoy exploring with friends, or build your own space when you are alone. The grind is its usual tedium, but not too unforgiving since you can easily sidestep needing to grind long times by risking it to venture to higher level areas which are open to all (you can technically go to level 50 area as a level 1, though I obviously wouldn't recommend it). No pay-to-win elements as far as I've seen, with in-game purchases relegated to skins, cosmetics, and at best in-game items that you can already craft/earn freely. The vehicles are a nice complement to how large and sparse the terrain is, though I enjoyed climbing mountains for the heck of it.

Downsides include the wide map offering scant little in transitionary spaces that are not "designated content area", and how shallow most of the worldbuilding, main story, and various side stories seem to be once you bothered to look deeper. The game also gets boring after a while, especially when playing alone. A new season has rolled around, which unfortunately means you're forced to restart from level 1 with only finger-countable amount of items you can take back with you; this leads to the whole crafting and inventory mechanics, which are quite robust but ultimately lackluster and kind of unfun once you've learned how to use it.

Overall, it's a decent game worth your time and the free price tag, but not one penny more. Might be worth a few dollars worth of in-game skins if you have a whole group of friends you can play with on the regular. In the end, it's basically one of those "space out" games that you'd play while you discuss and hang out with friends.

Game is simply a masterpiece in all places, but falls short of perfect.

Why are there cars in this titty simulator eludes me, but they're fun to drive around and customize.

Get it on sale, as it's pretty grind-y in the endgame

I occasionally play the game, just flying around and visit stars and planets, shooting some pirates, and sometimes building bases in profitable areas. It's like an interactive slice of life of sorts.

The updates this year is brilliant so far. Lots of new stuff I kept discovering. The dead atmosphereless planets are a nice touch. The Atlas gives purpose to whatever you are doing in game.

The devs are simply incredible. Granted their early start was shady as all hells and were bordering on a large scam, but they stuck through, pulled their pants up and said "Alright, we have a burning house to fix, let's do this." I thought they would dump the game like every other AAA devs out there, but no, they pushed through. They went and fix their mistakes. The game is now around what you'd expect from their early promises, and then a lot more.

There are grinding, but it's not really necessary per se. People are bloody gracious though, visit the Atlas often.

As someone else said though, the aspect of "procedurally generated planets" is a bit similar across the board in the end. Realistically, the majority of solar systems are small stars with large gas giants and moons the size of earth. That would be better for implementation instead, both from realism and aesthetic standpoint.

The DLCs are not worth the price, and the base game itself barely is.

But thank you modders for making the game enjoyable. Lots of nice overhaul mods with lots of foci and additions like Old World Blues, Equestria at War, and Kaiserreich. To enjoy base game without DLCs I recommend weaving your own game with historical focus tree mods or mods in the lines of Roads to 56.
