"Wait for the Engine Upgrade" - That's what we heard in the lead-up to 1896, the fated engine upgrade that would solve all the bugs and issues. Trade Windows, Disappearing Throwing Weapons, UI Rework, QOL Improvements. What could go wrong?
Everything. The UI is subpar and too large, with it taking months to fix and new UI bugs that baffle the user how they got through, such as hotkeys not being disabled when utilizing the search bar or still being unable to look at hunter bios. The reversal or lack of transparency of changes such as Rotjaw losing the one additional bounty or the burn adjustments from the 1896 relaunch.
It was hoped that these issues would be fixed rapidly, but it is now two months out and the bugs are still ever-present, with promised features such as team chat and random third for duos are still not added, with higher-ups more focused on promoting cosmetic DLCS or chasing the masses rather than refining the niche that Hunt has had for years. With the latest reveal of a Ghost Face crossover and lack of agency regarding the state of the lore, it is clear that priorities need to be changed and a clear vision laid out for the community to see. It feels like Crytek does not know where the game should be headed with two different hands at the helm, one who remembers the gritty, immersive 1800s shooter whilst one wants one that is "R6: 1896." If Crytek continues to chase after industry trends in order to make a quick buck, I fear that if one day, we'll have so many crossovers that when someone asks the question "Would you play Hunt: Showdown 1896 still if there were no crossovers?" and the answer would be a "No," then that means Hunt has lost its identity and can only rely on exterior IPs to generate any engagement, rather than relying on their unique setting and style. Crytek is lucky that they lack any competitors in the space of objective based extraction games or shooters set in the late 1800s, with this weapon variety, which is the only thing retaining players right now. With new competitors coming up such as Hunger, they risk losing sight of what made this game stand out amongst most shooters today.
